El Paso, TX (KVIA-TV)—Tx Dot El Paso crews will begin widening the freeway in the median between Mesa Street and Redd Road. According to TX Dot El Paso, the operation will begin in the eastbound lanes, requiring a 49-hour closure of I-10 from Redd to Mesa. The closure will start at 4 am on Saturday, September 7, and be in place until 5 am on Monday, September 9. All traffic will exit at Redd and take the south desert past Mesa. The following weekend, a  49-hour closure will begin in the westbound lanes between Mesa and Redd. TX Dot officials explain that crews will work on widening two bridges between Vinton Road and Transmountain Road. Then, a 56-hour closure of the eastbound lanes will go into effect the weekend of September 13. South Desert will temporarily reopen to just one lane for the eastbound detour. TX Dot officials say you should plan to avoid the area and take an alternate route if possible.

Jane Little Botkin shared her experiences that helped launch “GuyRex” into Miss USA pageant history. Throughout her book The Pink Dress, she awakens nostalgia by discussing what it was like living in El Paso, Texas, in the 1960s and 1970s. She focuses on the era’s conflicts, growth pains, and struggles with her family.

El Paso, TX (KVIA-TV) — Alexis Orate's niece, Bridges, died from D.R.E.S.S. Syndrome when she was 11 years old. According to the Jama Network, D.R.E.S.S affects adults and children and can be associated with harm or even death. It usually occurs 2 to 8 weeks after beginning to take a medication. Around 1 in 1000 people taking specific drugs develop DRESS.

Dr. Ogechika Alozie is an infectious disease internist in El Paso, Texas. He said, "Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) is a severe adverse drug reaction characterized by an extensive skin rash in association with visceral organ involvement, lymphadenopathy, eosinophilia, and atypical lymphocytosis." He said, "Unfortunately, even though it is caused by a drug, typically antibiotics and anti-epileptics in kids, even when the drug is stopped, it can continue and wreak havoc on the body. Even though it is called eosinophilia, the real issue is the immune system going hyper-responsive to a new medication/drug."

"I don't think the eosinophilia part matters in this topic since they're elevated, but the main thing is the immune response," Alozie said.

Alexis Orate wrote the book about her niece, Balloon Bridges, hoping people could find comfort in her words. She explains that the story is about loss and love. It provides a comforting reminder that we never forget our loved ones.

The classical series opens at 7:30 pm September 20-21 at the Plaza Theatre with Vivaldi's masterpiece, The Four Seasons, composed to mirror the spirit of each season through descriptive sonnets and Mahler's thrilling Symphony No. 1. They will also partner with local arts groups and join forces with the El Paso Opera for "Great Italian Areas" at 7:30 pm on October 18-19, 2024, at the Plaza Theatre. The first half of the season concludes with "Christmas in Vienna" at 7:30 pm.

December 6-7 at the Plaza Theatre. This performance will showcase the Choral Union and the talented Candice Reyes. EPSO will continue the Harry Potter film series this fall with Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in Concert at 7 pm November 9at the Plaza Theatre.  The El Paso Symphony Orchestra will accompany the film on the big screen, performing the musical score of Oscar®-winning composer John Williams'Williams.

The store, developed through a partnership between CISD and Goodwill Industries of El Paso, aims to provide special-education students with invaluable job skills and real-world experience. Students will staff the store, gaining hands-on training in retail operations, customer service, and inventory management — all within a supportive learning environment.

The store will offer a variety of goods, including gently used clothing, accessories, and household items. All proceeds from the sales will be reinvested into the program to enhance students' learning experiences further and provide additional resources for their development. A Goodwill donation bin will be housed at the Canutillo High School campus to support the training store. Donations are encouraged and welcomed.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA-TV)-A man in his 50s is dead after a shooting at Franklin High School. El Paso Independent School District officials say the officer investigated an incident on Thursday morning.

El Paso, TX (KVIA-TV)-With children walking to school, dashing between cars, or hopping in and out of buses while parents in cars drop kids off. Last week on ABC-7 at 4 we offered tips for drivers, and this week, TXDot’s Jennifer Wright is here with tips you can share with your school-age children. Plus, everything you need to know about the 40 hour closure in 1-10 west.

I-10 Widening West has it’s 40-hour closure of I-10 West, and it’s convoluted in that at 9PM Friday, it closes at the end of the current detour by Los Mochis, and at 4AM Saturday the point of closure moves back to Artcraft. This is so we can open two lanes on I-10 until that detour. BUT, because the two-lane frontage road cannot merge into the two-lane main lanes, we have to revert to closing North Desert at Enchanted Hills until further notice. That closure will begin at 1PM Monday, August 19. There is an on-ramp just after Transmountain that you will need to use to get on I-10, else you will have missed the boat there and will enter the circle of doom through the neighborhood. Please pay attention so you don’t hassle the ‘hood. North Desert will be strictly for Enchanted Hills only. Maps attached.

Montana Mill & Inlay moves to the area from Hawkins to Airway next week. Mesa Mill & Inlay is still working on punch list items. The Mesa Illumination project has so far placed 130 of the 30’ poles, and 37 of the 40’ light poles along Mesa from Doniphan to Glory Road. Once all energized, no more dark driving along Mesa. Sweet. See below to find out where they’re working next week.

Here’s a quick rundown of the east side widening projects for you:

• Montana Widening will have a complete closure of the eastbound frontage road Monday through Wednesday nights next week to remove barrier to completely open the eastbound frontage road. It’s a welcome event.
• Purple Heart Widening will have daily lane closures, and Thursday night the northbound lanes will be closed at Montana from 9PM - 5AM, with the detour being Montana to Global Reach. Saturday, 8/24 from 3AM to 7PM the whole shebang, north-and southbound lanes will be closed so crews can place bridge girders.
• Loop 375 Widening will have a northbound main lane closure from Zaragoza to North Loop, along with the North Loop underpass Monday through Thursday overnight starting at 9.

EP Water has closures on Montana by Bassett Center, Mesa Street downtown, and Gateway West by Yarbrough which they have shared with me and I include waaaay below. Check them out if they might affect you.

The cleanup events allow El Paso County residents to dispose of unwanted items while making a difference in their community.

The drop-off locations are:

• Fabens: 199 Citizen Transfer Station Rd. Fabens, TX 79838

• Westway: 1002 Tiffany Rd., Canutillo, Texas 79835 Passenger tires, bulk trash, and electronic waste will be accepted as follows:

• Tires: Each resident may bring up to 5 tires. There will be a maximum collection of 1,500 tires for the event. Accepted tires must measure 17 inches or smaller.

Bulk Trash and Electronic Waste o Residents may bring one pick-up truckload of bulk trash, including furniture, chairs, carpet, etc. Accepted electronics include computers, tablets, scanners, video games, cameras, radios, cellphones, VCRs, and DVD players. CRT monitors and televisions will NOT be accepted.

Some items may not be accepted, so residents are encouraged to sort their bulk waste prior to arrival. If you have any questions, contact the El Paso County Public Works Office at (915) 273-3330.

EL PASO, Texas–Del Sol Medical Center has appointed Glenda Villatoro as its new chief operating officer. Villatoro has served at Las Palmas Del Sol Healthcare for more than two decades, most recently as the administrative director of operations for 17 years. She assumed her new role in July. Villatoro was responsible for several operating departments, including rehab, pharmacy, laboratory, respiratory therapy, bariatrics, outpatient diagnostic imaging, food and nutrition services, security, and more.

 She also helped lead the acquisition and operational transition plans for a $17.8-million rehab hospital, as well as managed several facility-based projects, including the construction of a new freestanding emergency department and upgrades to a 20-bed orthopedic/neurological surgical unit, the sterile processing department, cath lab, and surgical services equipment. Villatoro also played an essential role in Del Sol Medical Center’s mass casualty disaster response after the tragic shooting in El Paso on Aug. 3, 2019, in addition to emergency management operations during the pandemic.

Villatoro earned her master’s degree in business administration from the University of Phoenix and has a bachelor’s degree in nursing from The University of Texas at El Paso. She earned her board certification as a nurse executive from the American Nurses Credentialing Center 2015.

EL PASO, Texas—The El Paso Fire Department signed a five-year contract with Air Methods to establish Fire STAR (Shock and Trauma Air Rescue), an air medical transportation service to enhance the community's emergency medical response capabilities.

Fire STAR will provide rapid air medical transportation, ensuring critically injured and ill patients receive timely and specialized care. This collaboration underscores the unwavering commitment of the City of El Paso Council and City leadership to improving public safety and emergency response. Air Methods, a leading provider of air medical services, brings extensive experience and a proven track record in delivering critical care in emergencies. By integrating air medical transportation, the department aims to reduce response times and improve patient outcomes, particularly when every second counts.

Fire STAR is expected to be operational by September 2024, providing the community with a clear timeline for the service's launch.

EL PASO, Texas ( KVIA-TV)—El Paso Zoo and Botanical Gardens is brewing an after-hours celebration for adults called Brew at the Zoo on Saturday, September 14. Tickets for the fun-filled, after-hours event are now on sale. The 21-and-older event features dozens of craft breweries serving over 100 varieties of ales, lagers, porters, hoppy IPAs, smooth stouts, and more. Beer sampling will begin at 7 p.m. and continue until activities close at 11 p.m. The Zoo’s Passport and Grasslands Cafés will be selling classic beer grub. Visitors will enjoy entertainment, including DJs and carnival games such as mechanical bull riding, ax throwing, and hippo chow-down. Select animal exhibits will also be open.

 El Pasoans Fighting Hunger board member Mark Mathis will deliver the keynote speech. His message will focus on the importance of community support and leadership in fostering economic growth and personal development.
 A particular highlight of the event will be the presentation of a check from Wells Fargo, demonstrating their commitment to supporting local job training initiatives and community development.

This achievement marks a step towards self-sufficiency and homeownership for the participant, showcasing the tangible benefits of the FSS program. The program's mission is to support participants in increasing their earned income and reducing dependency on public assistance and rental subsidies, thereby promoting self-sufficiency and financial independence.

HOME's program, a voluntary initiative, combines participants through the HCV program with supportive services tailored to each participant's needs, including financial literacy, job training, and homeownership readiness. The panel discussion is for mourning, reflection, and education.

By understanding the origins of extremism and its impacts, the aim is to foster a community committed to preventing future acts of hate and violence.

Robert Holguin will moderate the panel and will feature experts and community leaders who will discuss the ongoing effects of the attack, the impact of extremism, and the community's journey towards healing and resilience.

Peter Svarzbein, former El Paso Mayor Pro Tempore and current Community Engagement Manager for ADL in El Paso will emphasize the significance of this event.

El Paso, Texas (KVIA-TV) – The Paso del Norte Health Foundation announced a grant to Border Partners under the Healthy Eating Initiative to extend its work in nutrition education in Palomas, Mexico. Border Partners is a nonprofit organization uniting people from both sides of the US-Mexico border to improve access to food, shelter, clean water, health services, education, and economic security.

The previous funding from the Health Foundation, which allowed staff to deliver a comprehensive program on nutrition and gardening classes with school-age students in Palomas, was a resounding success, paving the way for further initiatives. The cooks for the schools' food service programs received training on including more healthy foods in the lunches they serve. The teachers attended training to learn why educating children about healthy eating habits is so important.

El Paso, TX (KVIA)- The City of El Paso encourages residents and visitors to show appreciation for lifeguards from the Parks and Recreation Department Aquatics Division as part of International Lifeguard Appreciation Day on Wednesday, July 31. Residents and visitors who meet with a City lifeguard are encouraged to say thank you.

As part of the celebration, guests can write thank you messages on white bulletin boards at all City pools and aquatic centers. The City and Parks and Recreation Department also recognizes lifeguards with pictures and videos on its social media platforms.

The Parks and Recreation Aquatics Division has over 180 lifeguards safeguarding 12 City pools and aquatic facilities annually. City lifeguards undergo extensive training, including hours of initial aquatic courses and testing, and possess the necessary certifications to respond to emergencies.

El Paso, TX (KVIA)- The FBI El Paso Field Office wants to bring to the public a recent scam involving using Bitcoin-Crypto ATMs. Special Agent Derek Hackert talks about the recent increase in these types of schemes.

El Paso, TX (KVIA)- This World Day Against Trafficking of Persons, FBI El Paso wants to raise awareness about human trafficking and the resources the FBI has available for victims. Human trafficking is the illegal exploitation of a person. Under the human trafficking program, the FBI investigates:

Sex trafficking: When individuals are compelled by force, fraud, or coercion to engage in commercial sex acts. Sex trafficking of a minor occurs when the victim is under the age of 18. For cases involving minors, it is not necessary to prove force, fraud, or coercion.

Labor trafficking: When individuals are compelled by force, threats, or fraud to perform labor or service.

Domestic servitude: When individuals within a household appear to be nannies, housekeepers, or other types of domestic workers, but they are being controlled and exploited.

Traffickers use violence, manipulation, false promises of well-paying jobs, or romantic relationships to exploit victims. Human trafficking is not limited to one particular geographic area or part of the country. Human trafficking can occur in any community, including cities, suburbs, and rural areas. The most effective way to investigate human trafficking is through a collaborative, multi-agency approach with partners. FBI El Paso’s Crime Against Children and Human Trafficking program works alongside local, state, and federal partners.

Victim Resources:

Victim recovery is the primary goal of trafficking investigations. The FBI’s multi-disciplinary team of Special Agents, Analysts, Victim Specialists, and Child Adolescent Forensic Interviewers work together to ensure a victim-centered and trauma-informed response. FBI Victim Specialists work with local, state, and federal resources to provide immediate assistance and long-term support. After recovering a victim of human trafficking, field offices seek to arrest and successfully prosecute the traffickers. FBI El Paso has Victim Specialists who stand ready to assist victims of crime by ensuring they receive the necessary resources.

NHTRC is a national, toll-free hotline with specialists available to answer calls from anywhere in the country, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

If you believe a child is involved in a trafficking situation, submit a tip through the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s CyberTipline or call 1-800-THE-LOST.
