El Paso, Texas (KVIA) -- The El Paso Chamber announced the Star on the Mountain will shine gold on Wednesday, September 4th, in recognition of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

The El Paso Chamber says that by lighting the Star in gold, El Paso joins communities across the nation, to honor the bravery of young cancer patients, supporting their families, and advocating for the continued efforts needed in cancer treatment and prevention.

“As the region’s only certified Children’s Oncology Group, El Paso Children’s Hospital is committed to providing the most advanced clinical treatments, allowing children to receive care close to home. Decades ago, many families were forced to leave El Paso for proper pediatric cancer care.  Since our opening in 2012, we have reduced the number of children needing to travel outside of El Paso by over 85%. Tonight’s lighting of the Star is to bring awareness and support to childhood cancer across the Borderland,” said Aley Valdespino, El Paso Children’s Hospital Nursing Director of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology.

The lighting is organized in partnership with the El Paso Children’s Hospital. Chaparral Wireless is the official internet provider for the Star on the Mountain.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Parents in the united states are overwhelmed and burned out with the dizzying pace of the world -- and it has become a public health concern. That's according to a surgeon general's advisory released on Wednesday August 29th.

The advisory cited a 20-23 survey of adults from the american psychological association. Researchers found that 33-percent of parents reported high levels of stress in the past month compared to 20-percent of other adults.

Dr. Vivek Murthy, US Surgeon General says "parental stress is real and it's widespread and we don't always see it because parents don't always talk about it."

The advisory describes how parents are now spending many more hours on both work and primary child care. The demands have come at the cost of quality time with one's partner, sleep and parental leisure time. The strain is even greater on parents caring for aging parents or other loved ones.

"48% of parents are saying that on most days they feel completely overwhelmed by stress. Parents are trying to figure out how to contend with a youth, mental health crisis and a loneliness epidemic that is hitting kids really hard right now," said Dr. Vivek Murthy, US Surgeon General.

The advisory called for a shift in policy and cultural norms. That includes recognizing that time spent parenting is equal to time spent working at a paying job. As well calling for national paid family and medical leave sick time for all workers and more support for financial assistance for child care.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) --The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is recognizes National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day on Wednesday, August 21st. Due to this, they will have extended DEA Museum hours from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

They will have an exhibit called "The Faces of Fentanyl" and it is one of the museum’s featured exhibits that commemorates the lives lost to fentanyl. More than 5,000 faces are included in the exhibit at DEA Headquarters as a reminder of the lives lost.

“The shift to synthetic drugs has resulted in the most dangerous and deadly drug crisis in United States’ history. The Faces of Fentanyl exhibit at DEA Headquarters stands as a solemn reminder of the toll this drug has taken on families all across this country, and it compels us to continue our fight against the cartels fueling this crisis,” said DEA Administrator Anne Milgram. “We hope you will join us on National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day by remembering and honoring the lives lost.”

DEA states they seized more than 80 million fentanyl pills and 12,000 pounds of fentanyl powder in 2023.  They explain that equates to more than 381 million potentially deadly doses of fentanyl that DEA was able to keep out of our communities.

The DEA says Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is approximately 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine. They also say drug traffickers are increasingly mixing fentanyl other illicit drugs to drive addiction and create repeat business.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- A study by Climate Central analyzed climate data across 241 locations in the U.S., and El Paso was ranked as the 3rd-fastest warming city in the U.S. More than 70,000 Texans are on dialysis, according to Texas Health and Human Services.

New research published in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases shows that patients who treat their kidney failure with dialysis could be among the most vulnerable to extreme heat swings. The study found that deaths among dialysis patients increased 15-20% during periods of high heat and humidity.

DaVita Kidney Care says Dialysis patients are some of the most medically complex patients in health care, because these patients must restrict fluids, making it challenging to stay hydrated on hot days. Additionally, they also often can't avoid going outside on hot days because they need their life-sustaining treatment.

The new study also says patients who receive dialysis are vulnerable to extreme weather events, and rising global temperatures may bring more frequent extreme heat events. It's critical that dialysis patients stay safe.

Dana Mitchell, MD, Group Medical Director says "Patients who are on dialysis, their kidneys are not functioning. So they are depending on a therapy to take care of the function of the kidneys that is no longer able to be done naturally."

Jesus Saenz, nurse practitioner and regional operations director at DaVita Kidney Care discusses the study findings, as well as what local dialysis patients can do to protect themselves. Nurse Saenz says, "during this extreme hot days. we recommend for them not to miss treatment. We do tend to see a spike over the summer months where patients feel it's too hot to go outside. However, they're missing treatments and that does put the patient at risk for hospitalizations."

Dr. Mitchell says "when it's hot outside, we normally go out. We can drink fluids and you know, we can increase our fluid intake, especially if we're sweating quite a bit. Dialysis patients should still be mindful of that despite the temperatures, because they can have more complications."

Deaths among dialysis patients have increased 15 to 20% During periods of high heat, according to the American Journal of Kidney Diseases.

Nurse Saenz told me what to do to protect yourself, "If there's diabetes in your family, if there's high blood pressure in your family, make sure you follow up with your primary doctor, and check your, your kidney function as well."

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- The new $2.5 million grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and will help researchers on a new study. The grant will provide stipends to four graduate students throughout its five-year duration.

Researchers at The University of Texas at El Paso wil study nicotine dependence in women. UTEP states this could lead to improved nicotine cessation treatments for women. The study will be lead by Laura O'Dell, Ph.D., a professor in the Department of Psychology at UTEP. They will research into how stress produced by nicotine withdrawal is intensified by variations in ovarian hormones in women.

“Despite how nicotine is consumed, this drug is known to have adverse effects on brain development and proper regulation of hormone levels in females, so we are addressing an important public health problem,” said O'Dell. "The results of this research are expected to contribute meaningfully to the development of more effective therapeutics for nicotine cessation for women, who are at greater risk for experiencing the adverse consequences of long-term nicotine use."

UTEP also says the results of this research could help explain the causes behind anxiety-like behavior experienced by females during abstinence from nicotine.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- 26-year-old Saul Miguel Gutierrez and 21-year-old Kayla Nunez each pled guilty to two charges today: manslaughter and accident involving death. Gutierrez and Nunez were arrested for the deadly multi-vehicle crash on I-10 at Hawkins in 2022 that killed Raymond Barron.

Today, Gutierrez and Nunez were sentenced to 10 years of probation, including 180 days in jail, and 200 hours of community service, according to court records. Yvonne Delgado, Barron's sister, told ABC-7 the sentencing "feels like a slap in the face."

In 2022, police said Gutierrez was driving a Corvette when he lost control and hit the center median. According to investigators, Nunez was driving a Tahoe that slammed into the back of a Pontiac Vibe, which Barron was driving at the time. The impact of that crash caused Barron to hit a cement barrier and his car to burst into flames, according to investigators. Police say both Gutierrez and Nunez were driving more than 110 mph at the time of the crash.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- In the United States 36 million children are exposed to double the number of heatwaves compared to 60 years ago, and 5.7 million are exposed to three times as many, according to a new UNICEF analysis.

Using a comparison between the 1960s and the 2020-2024 average, the analysis issues a severe warning about the speed and scale at which extremely hot days, which they measure as days being more than 95 degrees Fahrenheit, are increasing for almost half a billion children worldwide.

“The hottest summer days now seem normal,” said UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell. “Extreme heat is increasing, disrupting children’s health, well-being and daily routines.”

Heat stress within the body, caused by exposure to extreme heat, poses unique threats to the health and well-being of children, especially if cooling interventions are not available, according to the analysis. Evidence shows that it also impacts neurodevelopment, mental health, and well-being. The analysis shows children are also exposed to more severe, longer, and frequent heatwaves.

“Children are not little adults. Their bodies are far more vulnerable to extreme heat. Young bodies heat up faster, and cool down more slowly. Extreme heat is especially risky for babies due to their faster heart rate, so rising temperatures are even more alarming for children,” Russell said.

All Member State Parties to the Paris Agreement must submit new national climate plans which are Nationally Defined Contributions. This is set to happen in the upcoming months and the plans will set the course of climate action for the next 10 years.

"Governments must act to get rising temperatures under control, and there is a unique opportunity to do that right now. As governments are currently drafting their national climate action plans, they can do so with the ambition and knowledge that today’s children and future generations will have to live in the world they leave behind.”

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- The Children’s Hospital Association of Texas (CHAT) has submitted a testimony to the House Select Committee on Youth Health & Safety. The testimony by Stacy Wilson, president of CHAT, is regarding the importance of improving access to mental health care for children in Texas, which includes our children in El Paso.

CHAT says they want to place focus on kids who rely on Medicaid. They state they are advocating for policies and funding that promote children’s access to high-quality, comprehensive health care. CHAT represents 7 not-for-profit children's hospitals in Texas, including El Paso Children's Hospital.

In the testimony CHAT is asking that the legislature "build on its strong investments in prevention and early intervention to provide families with supports to navigate the mental health system and build out the continuum of care for children with serious mental and behavioral health conditions to address issues that are all too often deadly."

Additionally, in the testimony CHAT explains that by including these services in the Medicaid benefits, it would give families and children more options for care, therefore, avoiding unnecessary hospitalizations, preventing involvement with the juvenile justice system, and preserving families.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- By using fruit flies, a team of UTEP faculty and students researched the neurobiological process behind social drinking and how it boosts feelings of euphoria. The study identifies the region of the brain that is stimulated by social drinking. The study says that tipsy fruit flies aren’t that different from intoxicated humans, according to a UTEP biologist.

Researchers think they now know why grabbing a drink with friends at happy hour can likely make you feel chatty, friendly and upbeat, but grabbing a drink alone may make you experience feelings of depression. “Social settings influence how individuals react to alcohol, yet there is no mechanistic study on how and why this occurs,” said Kyung-An Han, Ph.D., a biologist at The University of Texas at El Paso who uses fruit flies to study alcoholism.

According to the UTEP study this may lead to a better understanding of how humans become vulnerable to Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). That disease affected nearly 29.5 million people just in 2023, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

Fruit flies are insects that share about 75% of the same genes that cause human diseases, Han explained. Therefore, by using fruit flies, Han and her team say they wanted to demonstrate that ethanol, which is the alcohol in drinks, causes different reactions in solitary versus group settings and that dopamine, the brain molecule that plays a role in pleasure, motivation and learning, is a key player for this phenomenon.

The team found that "the flies, regardless of whether they had normal or increased levels of dopamine, had a similar reaction to ethanol in a solitary setting — a tiny increase in activity. But in social settings, the flies with increased dopamine showed even more heightened hyperactivity than usual." Dr. Han says that with this study they demonstrated that both social settings and dopamine act together for the flies’ more intense response to ethanol.

“Our work is providing scientific knowledge to support the idea that the brain interprets and processes a person’s social surrounding and has that signal converge into the dopamine system that is also activated by alcohol consumption,” said Paul Rafael Sabandal, Ph.D., a research assistant professor in biological sciences and one of the study’s corresponding authors. “It gives us as researchers an idea of which brain area and components may serve as the meeting point for all the signals that contribute to AUD.”

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- El Paso City Council held a special meeting August 1st to discuss a proposed property tax rate.

Representatives unanimously passed a motion to decrease the tax rate, but will have two more hearings to make it official.

Despite the lower tax rate, the average homeowner will owe the same amount in taxes, due to the rising value of many homes in El Paso.

If the city council makes it official when they meet August 20th, the new rate would take effect September 1.

Mayor Oscar Leeser says the community has been making this request and this would be the second year adopting the “no-new revenue tax rate."

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- El Pasoans report seeing a bright light in the sky, with some saying it's a meteor. Daniel Paulus, is one of the many El Pasoans that experienced this rare sighting and here's how he describes it: "It was a myriad of colors. A friend of mine said, I think it's a meteor. I was like, what? So I pulled out my phone and started filming and sure enough, it started getting brighter and brighter. It started kind of breaking up. And yeah, I'm pretty sure it was a meteor shower. It was pretty crazy seeing this, you know, in person." Paulus says it's one of those things you only see on television, but you never thought you'd actually experience in person.

Physics and Astronomy Professor John G. Olgin, Ph.D. said "It more likely was burned up of a satellite coming into the atmosphere, the way the debris pattern was, and also the kind of speed that you're looking at." Dr. Olguin added, "It could actually be a rocket to bring a satellite debris, you know, reentry that came at the orbiting of these satellites, which is normally happening, you know, all the time."

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico (KVIA) -- The United States Attorney's Office held a press conference Thursday, July 25th at 12:00 PM at 200 North Church Street Las Cruces, NM 88001. They announced the results of a multi-agency effort to disrupt transnational human trafficking and smuggling.

The U.S. Attorney's office in Las Cruces said that law enforcement have dismantled the Lopez Human Smuggling Organization. Homeland security says they had been investigating the criminal family and their operations for at least 3 years. This is a transnational human smuggling organization.

According to the indictment, 8 members of the Lopez Organization have been indicted and 2 have been arrested. The indictment states 46-year-old Ronaldo Galindo Lopez-Escobar, a-k-a “Tio Roni,” lead the operation from Guatemala. Investigators say he coordinated with Mexican human smugglers to smuggle people from Guatemala through Mexico into the U.S. using the Southern New Mexico border, including Las Cruces.

U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez for the District of New Mexico called it "a victory" in the fight against human smuggling and delivered these remarks: "We're forfeiting over half $1 million in proceeds, a Corvette and seizing 11 bank accounts. And we're excited to announce that the United States Department of Treasury has sanctioned the Lopez Human Smuggling Organization, thereby blocking all property of the organization and prohibiting all transactions with the organization from folks in the United States. EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- The Texas Judicial Commission on Mental Health created the County mental health law plan (CMHLP) program, because they say the laws relating to persons with mental illness or intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD) are complex and affect multiple individuals.

The workshop took place Wednesday, July 24th from 10 A.M. to 4 P.M. at the Emergence Health Network on 201 E Main St, El Paso, TX 79901. During this workshop, participants from El Paso County are to discuss the processes that someone who is involved in the court system with a mental illness goes through. They will also evaluate how to improve those processes.

The CMHLP is a JCMH pilot program offering technical assistance, tools, and resources including a checklist to support nine counties to create a County Mental Health Law Plan. The nine counties in the pilot include El Paso, Henderson, Medina, Fort Bend, Burleson, Burnet, Hays, Duval, and Travis.

JCMH says the goal of the pilot is to determine if creating this plan will encourage collaboration, efficiency,cost-savings, and accountability for how mental health laws are managed at the county level. The JCMH says Judges, prosecutors and defense attorneys, law enforcement and probation officers attended four virtual classes from January to March 2024 to prepare for the program. The classes were on the topics of Civil Commitment, Early Intervention, Mental Health Courts and Competency Restoration.

The JCMH will travel to each pilot county for a one-day workshop this summer and fall. Each county will have a written plan of the process of how their county accomplishes Texas mental health laws once the workshop concludes.

Santa Fe, NEW MEXICO (KVIA) -- The New Mexico Department of Health (NMHealth) launched a new campaign called “Free to Provide” on July 22nd. The campaign is to attract healthcare professionals to the state. It is designed to highlight the freedom that medical providers in New Mexico have, in contrast to services restricted in other states. NMHealth says there's 37 public and private hospitals, medical centers, clinics and individual providers, participating in the campaign.

“Providing health care is hard everywhere,” said NMHealth Secretary Patrick Allen. “The legal and political environment in Texas and other states is making it even harder. We think there’s an opportunity to let providers know in New Mexico they can deliver care without the local sheriff or district attorney looking over their shoulder to second guess their medical judgement.”

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Many El Pasoans say they enjoy drinking coffee on a daily basis. Kristine M. Glass, MD Psychiatrist, physician and assistant professor at Texas Tech Health El Paso says it's okay to drink coffee, as long as you do so moderately. She also says it's important to understand your threshold and how you react to caffeine. This means keeping an eye on how much you're having and how you're dosing it throughout the day.

The Food and Drug Administration says moderate coffee consumption can be part of a healthy diet, but they also warn that overuse can affect your mental health. Overuse can lead to side effects like feeling of unhappiness, insomnia, jitters, anxiousness, nausea, and headaches. Dr. Glass says caffeine affects everyone differently and advices you to measure how much you can handle, without prompting any negative side effects. You can do so by starting small and then adding the amount gradually.

Additionally, the FDA says that if you'd like to cut down on caffeine intake, you should do so gradually as well. Dr. Glass agrees and says stopping abruptly can affect your mental health by causing withdrawals, anxiety and nervousness. Dr. Glass also said she recommends about 2 milligrams of coffee a day. The good news is you can enjoy a daily cup of coffee, as long as you're following doctors orders and it's in moderation to protect your mental health.

ABC-7 asked El Pasoans if they drink coffee and here are some of their responses:

"I'm a tea drinker."

 "I don't, No."

"I do."

"You know what? Not really, but right now, I was just here. So you know, I got some."

"I don't drink coffee whatsoever."

"I drink it straight from the bottle!"

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- There's a lack of all different types of mental health providers in Texas, but it is particularly affecting the community of El Paso. "Rural and border areas tend to be most impacted with lack of mental health," said Kristine M. Glass, MD Psychiatrist, physician and assistant professor at Texas Tech Health El Paso.

Vanessa Macias is an El Pasoan who struggles with mental health, says more people should get into the field. "Since it's such a taboo thing, a lot of providers don't really look into it or they don't feel the need to come to work into the field, but it's a necessity," said Macias. "I myself struggle with mental health. I'm myself seek, help. And I get it through therapy services, through psychiatric services, through counseling. I have relatives. I have friends that get mental mental health help. And it's. It's a struggle. It's an everyday thing. It's not easy."

I went to Texas Tech Health El Paso to ask a mental health professional how this is affecting El Paso and Dr. Glass said "the impact is unable to adequately treat things like depression, anxiety, PTSD and substance use. So sometimes, when these mental health concerns go untreated for a while, there's an impact to the individual. And then sometimes their families and the community."

A report from the Texas Department of State Health Services shows there is only 8 psychiatrists for every 100,000 people in El Paso County. I also asked if everyone needs to see a psychiatrist when struggling with mental health. Dr. Glass also said "Not everyone needs to see a psychiatrist there's different types of mental health clinicians. There's counselors, social workers. What we call therapists as well." She also says there are changes in El Paso that are trying to improve things "Having the medical school here is very helpful to train individuals with the cultural knowledge of the area and the expertise."

Dr. Glass said another thing that could help is "Irecruitment, and, outreach, spreading the word about working in mental health." She says this could make a big difference in someone's life. If you need mental health support at any time you can always dial 988, which is the national suicide and crisis hotline.

The race begins at 4:00 a.m. with a 30 hour race cut off at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 18th. The runners are set to run 100 miles through Colorado alpine wilderness, accumulating 18,000 feet of elevation gain throughout the race.

“I have been fortunate enough to attend Special Olympics competitions and events and personally get to know some Special Olympics athletes,” Trubow shared. “Our world would be a better place if every human witnessed their resolve and demeanor. To see their grit, effort, and determination is contagious. It’s these qualities one needs to power through an ultramarathon.”
