EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) - The El Paso based custom catering company opened its doors to local foodies looking for some great grab-and-go breakfast and lunch options.

The Culinary Studio and Venue is owned by Jordan and Tara Freedman.

Tara Freedman has been interested and dedicated to the food industry since she was just 13. In 2017 she founded NOSH at Montecillo, quickly becoming a favorite eatery for many El Pasoans.

Jordan Freedman ran a successful food truck for many years.

They worked together for five years primarily as a catering company, but decided to expand.

"Our objective here is to create community and be able to see our clients on a more frequent basis rather than waiting until they have an event to see us," said Tara Freedman. "We hope that we get to see them very often."

The Freedman's say it's a Jewish deli inspired menu providing meal prep, creative coffee drinks, and a range of other food options.

Their new event space, "The Venue," is available to rent for gatherings, celebrations, and special events.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -The University of Texas at El Paso announced some changes to their 2024 Dinner Theatre season.

One of the major changes is a new funding model..

UTEP says the dinner theatre musicals will now be collaborating with the University’s Department of Theatre and Dance.

This change comes after a review of operations found that while the dinner theatre was heavily subsidized by student fees, only about 10 percent of the shows attendees were students and fewer than half of the performers were students.

On Sept. 1, the beginning of the fiscal year, UTEP said it will support musical theater through an additional general revenue allocation of $322,000.

This amount replaces the amount that previously came from student fees.

According to the UTEP, the total operations budget for the dinner theatre last season was about $1 million and the average ticket sales per production last season was about $95,000.

UTEP says there will now be greater emphasis placed on roles being played by students as part of the university’s teaching mission.

The university is also searching for a new faculty member who specializes in musical theater to be the dinner theatre director.

The 2024-25 season opening production will be Disney’s Beauty and the Beast on Oct. 11.

Tickets go on sale to the public on Tuesday, sept.10.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- The iconic Christmas light show display, put on by Fred Loya, will now be returning to the Loya home after being held at Ascarate Park for the last two years.

"We're very excited to bring back the show to its original place, its original birthplace. And we think the people of El Paso have also asked for it," said Fred Loya. "We are very grateful to the county for the two years they hosted us, but we think we can give it back, the original focal point, that it had here in a way that we could not do it at the park."

Project Manager, Scott Brown, said preparation for the light show has already begun. Brown said it takes over a month to set up all the decorations and lights. This year, he said the team is expecting to put up about 800,000 light fixtures throughout the property.

"The amount of work that goes into this show is unbelievable. There will be about 35 people here starting to build it in October, everyday putting this thing together," said Brown.

The show will begin November 29 and run through Christmas Day.

El Paso County Parks and Recreation Director, Tim Fulton, released the following statement:

"El Paso County has had a great partnership with Fred Loya over the past two years. Overall, we felt Holiday Lights on the Lake was a successful family-oriented event. The Loya team informed us they wanted to bring back the focus to the “show” theme rather than just a light display.

This provides us with the opportunity to create a new unique event for the community. Both years of LOL, the community expressed to us they wanted a drive through light display. Our staff is working to provide a light show that can be experienced in a vehicle. We will also be adding three family-oriented events to compliment the show. In addition, the County is looking for new partners who may be interested in working with us to create a fun experience at Ascarate Park, arguably El Paso’s most popular and frequented park."

UPDATE: The Juarez Civil Patrol says the body of Rafael Antonio Rodríguez Ibarra was found by search and rescue team Sunday at 8:30 a.m.

The director of the Juarez Civil Patrol, Sergio Rodriguez, says the search and rescue protocols were activated on Friday at 9:30 p.m. when they received reports of Ibarra and another teen being swept by currents caused by the floods along Paseo de la Victoria and Tapioca Streets. The other teen was found Friday night alive.

Rodriguez says special equipment, including drones and small boats, were used in the search of a dam in the area where Ibarra was reported missing.

Ibarra would have turned 16 today.

JUAREZ, Chihuahua (KVIA) - The Juarez Civil Patrol's Search and Rescue team continue their efforts to find a 16-year-old boy that was reported swept away by the current after heavy rains flooded streets in Juarez.

Channel 44, our news partners in Juarez, say Rafael Antonio Rodríguez Ibarra and another teen were swept away along Tapioca Street Friday night. The second teen was eventually found alive and well.

The search was originally postponed until Saturday morning and teams began their search in a dam near Tapioca Street which is near where he goes to school at CONALEP.

"About 7 or 7:40 pm Friday, which is when they get out of school, my mom who is his grandmother came to pick him up, she waited for him for awhile where she always waits for him and he never showed up," Ibarra's aunt said. "My mom came back home, and later we found out that he was just not coming back. So we came back here and through social posts we found out what happened, that he was taken by the flooding waters."

A backpack was found along with other debris during the search efforts Saturday, but so far no indication of where Ibarra might be.

He was last seen wearing a white polo shirt, light grey pants, school or dress shoes, and had a thin silver chain.

Saturday his family asked the community to join search efforts.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) - The Guiding Star Southwest and The Lily Pad Maternity Home gathered more than 208,120 diapers to give out to moms and dad in the community Labor Day weekend.

It's been part of their "August Hero Drives". The program offers free diapers, wipes, socks, and other essentials for area parents.

"We've helped over 5000 moms with over 200,000 diapers just this month," said Mark Cavalier, CEO of the Southwest Coalition.

The Drive-Thru Diaper Blowout Saturday saw about 500 parents.

Organizers also handed out hotdogs and other goodies for those waiting in line.

"The Guiding Star Southwest women's pregnancy and wellness center is a nonprofit that offers support and care for mothers at all stages. The Lily Pad Maternity home is a nonprofit initiative to help moms that need a safe place to live throughout their pregnancy and postpartum time," added Cavalier.

The organizations' mission is to help moms and dad be heroes for their children.

The efforts provide about a week's worth of free diapers, which is estimated to save money.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- El Paso City/County Health Authority Dr. Hector Ocaranza tells parents in the community not be afraid or panic after a vaccinated student at Alderete Middle School tested positive for Chickenpox , Canutillo ISD officials announced Thursday.

According to the district, the student was fully vaccinated against the Varicella virus, Canutillo ISD officials say, meaning this appears to be a breakthrough case.

"This is something that can happen, and it is not to cause any alarm," said Dr. Ocaranza. "We are working very closely with school officials and it is a good reminder that people need to stay up to date with their vaccinations as well."

Dr. Ocaranza explained people who have been vaccinated against chickenpox can still get the disease. However, they usually have milder symptoms than people who are not vaccinated.

"And that's the reason why, before the school starts, we invite everybody, all the parents, to bring their child in and make sure that they're up to date with the vaccinations," he said.

According to the CDC, Chickenpox usually lasts about 4 to 7 days. A common sign of chickenpox is a rash that turns into itchy, fluid-filled blisters which eventually become scabs.

Dr. Ocaranza said the people that medical providers are mostly concerned about getting chicken pox are those that are not vaccinated, have never gotten chickenpox, and have a weakened immune system.

He reminds parents to continue teaching children to wash their hands as a preventative measure, and for parents to stay up to date with their vaccinations.

SOCORRO, Texas (KVIA) -- The City of Socorro said it has been receiving calls from concerned residents regarding a large number of Red Flour Beetles in the area.

Several residents have told ABC-7 the problem has been seen throughout the community for over three weeks and they are growing tired of it.

Ciana Chambers, who has been living in Socorro for over 10 years, said this is the first year she has seen these bugs in her home.

"The vents, through the windows, through the sink, through the tub, like they're just coming from everywhere," said Chambers.

Chambers said since she has started seeing these beetles in her home, she now cleans daily. Though, she said it hasn't made a difference.

"I was away from home for maybe about one day and a half, and I came home and they were all in my bed," she said. "My daughter is afraid of sleeping in the bed. She doesn't go to sleep quickly because she feels like they are around her."

Entomology Specialist at New Mexico State University Dr. Joanie King told ABC-7 while they are invasive and a nuisance, they are not dangerous to the public.

"The only thing is that some people might be allergic to them," Dr. King explained.

Dr. King said one of the reasons we may be seeing these insects are due to the weather or an infestation that spread to the community.

"One reason is that they are looking for shelter indoors because it's so hot outside. So they're looking for places to live and feed. There may have also been locally, a like, maybe a farmer's market where they were selling some sort of stored product and it had an infestation," said Dr. King.

The City of Socorro gave the following tips:

PREVENTION

The city said there are ways to prevent infestations from happening:

  • Weather seal the bottom of doors.
  • Caulk all cracks around windows and gaps in entry or exit holes in exterior walls for appliances and plumbing.
  • Put fine mesh screen on roof vents, and any under-home access points.

TREATMENT

The city also provided tips on how to treat infestations that have already occurred:

  • Spray a pyrethroid insecticide to exterior parts of the home.
  • Turn off all exterior lights if possible.
  • Keep windows closed, unless the screen has finer-type mesh than a standard window screen.
  • Spray perimeters with synthetic pyrethroids or pyrethrins.
  • WARNING: Do not use insecticides in food preparation areas, and only use those labeled for indoor use.
  • Throw away infested food.
  • Empty the area where you store food and vacuum. Wash shelves, drawers and corners with hot water and soap. You can also check for hidden areas under or around appliances.

Other residents who have been experiencing the same issues, tell ABC-7 they want answers from the city.

"Once it's the whole area of Socorro, what's going on? That's my concern. What made these things come to Socorro?," added Luz Onserez, Socorro resident.

ABC-7 has reached out to the City of Socorro for comment, and are awaiting a response.

The spokesperson says the officers tried to arrest a 39-year-old man on arrest warrants for robbery who then "brandished a weapon." At that time, the spokesperson says the "officers fired their weapons." The 39-year-old man, who police have not yet identified by name, died.

No officers were injured, the spokesperson explained.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) --  Parents are calling for change after classrooms at Purple Heart Elementary School have gone without A/C.

Some parents said it has been an issue for weeks. One parent even told ABC-7 she brought her own fan to her child's classroom to ensure they stay cool.

"Yeah, it's been a problem. They've been coming home real hot, you know, like, not dehydrated, but, they have to bring water bottles, a lot, to school so that way they can, not overheat and stuff," said family member, Ezequel Montiel. "I feel like they're just going to get sick and, due to heat stroke and stuff."

Worried about their safety, some parents question why they weren't notified.

"I was not aware. I'm a little shocked," said parent, Edgar Venegas. "..We pay our taxes so they can have their, amenities all up to date, so that's not fair for us."

A Socorro School District Spokesperson released this statement:

"This time of year can be challenging to keep schools cool due to the extreme heat. High temperatures put a strain on equipment which unfortunately at times causes systems to malfunction.

Maintenance and repairs for air conditioning systems have been fully funded, however with schools, businesses and households facing similar challenges at the same time, it has taken longer to receive parts needed for repairs. For Purple Heart Elementary, some of the needed parts have recently been received and repairs are ongoing.

To support students and teachers while units are pending repair, our maintenance team works diligently to provide portable units to help cool and ventilate classrooms. Schools also work to provide alternative learning spaces for classes whose systems are pending repair."

ABC-7 reached out to EPISD, YISD, and Canutillo ISD to see if they are dealing with similar issues.

A Canutillo ISD Spokesperson responded with this statement:

"District-wide we currently have six classrooms without working air conditioning units along with one portable at Northwest Early College High School. The district currently operates with 95% HVAC refrigeration units and 5% evaporative coolers.

Short term, students are moved from impacted classrooms to other classrooms with functioning AC units and at Northwest Early College, portable refrigeration units are added. Long term, the recent voter approved bond program will provide new HVAC units to our campuses"

ABC-7 is waiting to hear back from the other area districts.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser is set to hold a news conference Thursday to discuss the city manager selection process, timeline, and next steps.

This comes after committee member Cindy Conroy told ABC-7 she feels the process is being "rushed."

With the election around the corner and six council positions up for re-election, including the mayor, Conroy said we are rushing the process.

"And in my mind, this is not the way corporate America works, this is not the way I've seen the public sector work," Conroy said.

Applications for the City Manager have been whittled down from 80 to four, and the final four candidates are currently employed by the city of El Paso.

Conroy said while the best may be internal, it would be nice to have seen that there was an external search.

The four candidates for the position, all of whom currently work for the city, are:

  • Robert Cortinas: Chief Financial Officer and Deputy City Manager for Internal Services, overseeing human resources and information technology.
  • Mario D’Angostino: Deputy City Manager for Public Health and Safety, responsible for police, fire, and public health departments.
  • Nicole Ferrini: Director of Community and Human Development, managing programs related to housing, homelessness, climate change, and social justice.
  • Dionne Mack: Deputy City Manager for Quality of Life, handling museums, libraries, and parks.

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico (KVIA) -- Three former New Mexico State University basketball players facing sexual assault charges are expected to be in court Monday.

The New Mexico Attorney General's Office has charged Deshawndre Washington, Doctor Bradley, and Kim Aiken Jr. with a combined 37 felony sex crimes.

Washington and Bradley were last seen in court in December of last year, following pleading not guilty a month earlier.

Aiken Jr. was initially issued a $20,000 bench warrant for his arrest for not appearing in court, but later appeared in December. Aiken's attorney said he was playing basketball overseas.

If the former players are convicted with these charges they will face up to more than two decades behind bars.

The New Mexico Attorney General's office previously told ABC-7 that four people made allegations that lead to the charges.

The sexual assault allegations within the program first came to light in February of 2023, when one player filed a police report against the three.

Those allegations saw the program shutdown for the remainder of the season and then Head Coach, Greg Heiar, was fired.

According to court documents, the virtual hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- For many August 3, 2019 was the darkest day in the Borderland, a day that tore families apart and brought others together.

As the fifth anniversary of the Walmart Mass Shooting, that claimed the lives of 23 people, nears. ABC-7 sits down with some of the staff from University Medical Center, and Del Sol Medical Center who made a difference our community.

For several, the day started as any other. Until, they got the call they were prepared for, but hoped would never happen.

"Got a call from my chief nursing officer, at the time, and she said, it's real. So, this is what's going on. There is a mass casualty at the, Walmart. There's an active shooter, and we're going to need to respond," said John Duran, Del Sol Medical Center, Chief nursing officer.

Eager to help, medical staff came out ready to work.

"People just showed up and they were ready. No one knew what was going on. They knew that we needed to be here," said Michael Lowe, UMC Emergency Dept. Assistant Director.

Located just 3 miles away, 11 people were taken from the the Cielo Vista Walmart to Del Sol Medical Center.

El Paso's level one trauma center, UMC, received 14 wounded victims. For many, it's something they've never seen.

"We just started getting all the reports from the ambulances like it was just one after the other, after the other," described Alejandra Carzoli, RN, University Medical Center.

Though both hospitals train for mass casualty situations, it was something they hoped would never happen.

"I can tell you personally, you know, we always prepared for it. The team is always ready for it, but you never expect for something like that to happen here in El Paso," said Duran.

Still, many say the memories of that day replay in their minds.

"..and I remember one lady, she was explaining how she saw the gunman. He shot at her, shot other people, killed people in front of her, and she says, I have forgiveness in my heart," said Alan H. Tyroch, M.D. at UMC.

Looking back on Aug. 3, medical staff said what happened that day made El Paso Strong.

"This is what we're here for, August 3rd was awful. Patients are going to keep coming in, and they need us to be, who they need us to be. That's what we're here for. It's the life we chose. It's the profession we love. We just got to keep going," said Michael Kennedy, Nursing Supervisor, UMC.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- As the start of a new school year nears for El Paso ISD, students at H.E. Charles Middle School are now banned from wearing all-black clothing at school.

This comes after the schools principal claimed it's "associated with mental health issues."

EPISD officials told ABC-7 this is in response to student safety concerns brought forward by parents and teachers.

"I understand that it is a concern, but keep in mind that students safety is our number one priority, and so anytime, there are concerns that are brought forward about student safety it's important for us to take those seriously," said EPISD Executive Principal, Sarah Venegas.

Venegas said last year the school allowed black pants, now only khaki pants and blue jeans will be allowed.

"Wearing your uniform is a part of the school rules, at every campus, if their in uniform violations it can be a disciplinary infraction but that is up to every administrator," she added.

Some parents tell ABC-7 they have mixed feelings about the change.

"I don't think we should be grouping, and red flagging kids that just like to wear black," said El Paso Parent, Stephanie Rascon.

"It brings down, I think, the mood of the school, if it's just black," added Parent, Nancy Rangel-Gomez.

ABC-7 spoke with mental health expert, Krista Wingate, about if the clothing children choose to wear correlates with their mental well-being.

"I think there's so much more that can be considered when were thinking about mental health struggles and challenges with adolescents and young children," she said.

Other than clothing, Wingate said it's important to look a child's behavioral patterns when concerned about their mental state, and speak with them.

"I think they should be looking out for different signs of stress or different signs of anxiety. A lot of times students will feel pressure. They may have difficulty because they have a change in their routine, so they might feel overwhelmed with shifting from the summer months, going back into school, and needing to organize themselves for assignments and different tasks that have to be completed academically," she added.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. NAMI El Paso commemorated the month their 11th Annual Minority Mental Health Community Forum: “Self-Care for All; Inclusion & Diversity in Self Preservation."

It took place at the El Paso Community College Friday morning.

NAMI El Paso said the event emphasizes the importance of self-care practices within our borderland community.

It featured a health fair, expert talks, and community connections, all aimed at promoting mental wellness in an inclusive and supportive setting.

"One of the most important reasons that we host this event, especially during National Minority month, is to normalize the conversations around mental health and help people understand that they are not alone and that there is support and access out there," said Isidro Torres, Executive Director of NAMI El Paso. "Even though it may be difficult to gather as a community, we can help make those changes so that everybody has the access they need."

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has issued an Ozone Action Day for the El Paso Area Thursday from 6 AM to 9PM MDT.

According to the TCEQ, atmospheric conditions are expected to produce high levels of ozone pollution in the El Paso area.

Smoke from wildfires across the country are also impacting air quality in the Borderland. The National Interagency Fire Center says about 70 wildfires are burning now, including those in California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona and other western states. More than a hundred are burning in Canada as well according to that country's National Wildland Fire Situation Report.

The TCEQ advises that anyone can help prevent ozone pollution by sharing a ride, walking, riding a bicycle, taking your lunch to work, conserving energy and keeping your vehicle properly tuned.

The El Paso Community College (EPCC) partnered with the El Paso Community Foundation for their annual School Store in partnership.

This project not only makes sure students have the tools they need in the classroom, but they earned play money to “shop” for supplies as they visited booths to learn information about different programs and participated in campus tours.

EPCC says they are committed to increasing the number of students going to college with this partnership.

About 1,200 backpacks were handed out Saturday.

This event has been around for nine years.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- For Joshua Serrano, the road to recovery has been a hard and long fought battle, after suffering life threatening injuries from a car crash on Oct. 15, 2023.

Serrano, a Registered Nurse at Providence Memorial, was a passenger in a deadly car crash that killed 31-year-old Alonso Mario Lopez.

According to El Paso Police, 21-year-old Ft. Bliss resident Terry Randall Kinkade was arrested on an intoxication manslaughter charge and an intoxication assault charge, after his car slammed into Lopez's car on Loop 375 at Montana in East El Paso.

Lopez died at the scene, Serrano was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Online court records show Terry Randall Kinkade pleaded guilty and was sentenced Wednesday to 8 years in prison.

"I feel that it's unfair that Mr. Kinkade got 8 years and he still has that chance to live his life and start a family and that's something Mario won't ever be able to do," Serrano told ABC-7.

Serrano said he spoke face to face to Kinkade during the sentencing.

"I told him how I felt about killing Mario, about destroying my career and my life. My, quality of life is going to be forever changed," he said. "Definitely a weight off my shoulders. It was a lot of pent up anger, frustration, sadness. So it definitely was a release to be able to tell him how I felt about the situation."

According to the gofundme made for Serrano after the crash, he suffered an internal decapitation, rib fractures and a Hematoma in his lung and spine.

The fundraising page said he was in for months of hospitalization and physical therapy after.

"I had to learn how to eat, how to walk how to brush my teeth how to do everything, how to chew so it's a difficult road," said Serrano. "I'm still unable to drive unable to work, so I've been out of work since the accident."

Serrano says now he can work towards the future and enjoy the special moments in life like seeing his daughter graduate.

He said he hopes to be able to return to work in the near future.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- It's a Fourth of July tradition for many El Pasoans to celebrate at Red Sands, in El Paso County's far eastside.

Red Sands is a popular attraction for off-road enthusiasts and a place several families go out to pop fireworks every year on the holiday.

According to Jamil Moutran, Chief of Texas Rescue Patrol, Fourth of July weekend usually brings an increase of injury to those riding ATV’s.

The Texas Rescue Patrol wants to remind the community of the dangers that can occur while riding.

Moutran said riders need to follow some tips like, wearing a helmet, being aware of your surroundings at all times, and staying hydrated.

He recommends getting ATV lessons beforehand to ensure your riding is as safe as possible.

Late last year, the Texas Rescue Patrol, created a GoFundMe fundraiser to raise necessary funds to purchase body armor for volunteer EMTs.

This same after Moutran said they were seeing an increase in people firing their weapons recklessly in the area.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Ahead of the Fourth of July holiday, the El Paso Fire Department reminds the community that the use of fireworks within the city are prohibited and extremely dangerous.

According to El Paso Fire, the use of fireworks inside city limits is a Class C misdemeanor with fines of up to $500.

Officials said firework injuries are one of the leading causes of medical emergencies during Fourth of July celebrations with children being the ones injured most often.

Common injuries and accidents when using any pyrotechnic material include severe skin burns, eye injuries, hearing loss, and fires. The department said, even the seemingly harmless pyrotechnic materials like sparklers can be the culprit of severe injuries or accidents. Sparklers, for instance, can reach temperatures of up to 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit.

To keep safe during the holiday weekend, the fire department provided the following safety tips:

  • Dial 9-1-1 if in need of emergency assistance.
  • Consider attending an authorized public fireworks display.
  • If attending a public display, children must be supervised at all times.  Do not pick up any firework debris as it could still be hot enough to cause burn injuries.
  • Keep grills and other fire sources at least 7 feet away from your home, roofs, trees, etc.
  • Establish a pet-free and children-free safe zone at least 3 feet from any stoves, ovens, or grills.
  • Completely extinguish any items used for cooking charcoal, wood, or pellets.
  • Residents who live outside city limits, need to check any applicable bans before using fireworks.

During this time, we also see many frightened pets escape from their homes. Its important to bring pets indoors during firework displays, ensure pets have a collar with ID tags, and have a microchip with up to date information.

Update (July 9, 2024): Our news partners in Juarez, Channel 44, reports the quinceañera, Helen, and her mother, Guadalupe, were just released from the hospital.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- The three girls killed in a crash in Juarez were heading to pickup dresses for a Quinceañera that was happening this weekend.

Henry Raygoza of El Paso is accused of homicide for causing the crash.

Our news partners at Channel 44 identified the teens as 13-year-old Ashley Daniela, 14-year-old Angelica, and 16-year-old Nemesis Gisel.

Investigators say Raygoza was driving a black jeep that rear-ended a Honda, which then ran over the median, and then went the wrong way on the opposite road.

A semi-truck crashed with the Honda.

Investigators say Raygoza was speeding because he was driving away from another crash nearby.

The three girls who died were in the honda.

Another two people were with them and survived. 15-year-old Helen and her mother Guadalupe remain hospitalized in critical condition.

Channel 44 is reporting Helen's quinceañera was this Saturday and they were driving to pick up dresses in downtown Juarez.

Raygoza is accused of driving intoxicated after testing positive for cocaine.

The crash happened Monday along the road next to the border in Juarez near the Santa Fe bridge.

Raygoza was also taken to the hospital, he is expected to recover.

Family has now started a Gofundme to help with funeral expenses.

"Before taking off, the two younger girls send a selfie photo to their mom stating how happy they were to find dresses for the event and would show her once they arrived. That time never came. Three of them have gone to be with the Lord," stated the fundraising page.

It said the expenses for the funerals have substantially increased, as they ask for help for all 5 family members.

Here is the link to donate.

RUIDOSO, New Mexico (KVIA) - The South Fork Fire is now at 17,551 acres burned and 31% contained, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. Meanwhile, the Salt Fire grew to 7,775 acres and remains at 7% contained.

More than 1,000 personnel are helping contain the fire.

Saturday afternoon members from the Texas Division of Emergency Management's A&M Force 1 arrived in Ruidoso and are conducting search and rescue operations.

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham met with FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell, Ruidoso Mayor Lynn Crawford, and Thora Padilla, President of the Mescalero Apache Tribe.

Criswell says the federal government will offer assistance to those who had to leave their homes and those who lost their homes.

Governor Lujan Grisham announced that state benefits for those evacuees will not interfere with federal benefits.

Some permanent residents of certain subdivisions in Lincoln County were allowed to return to their home Saturday evening after the evacuation order was lifted.

Those neighborhoods include Ranches of Sonterra 1, 2, and 3, Rancho Ruidoso Valley Estates, and Enchanted Forest.

Authorities advised residents to use US Highway 380.

Saturday at 9 p.m. New Mexico State Police posted on X, their officers were investigating an Officer Involved Shooting on US 380 involving the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office. NM State Police advised the scene was active and neither deputies or a suspect were shot.

The investigation stopped traffic along US 380 for hours as some residents were making their way back to their homes. No other details were provided.

Sunday beginning at 8 a.m. permanent residents of the Sierra Vista, Sun Valley, and Villa Madonna areas will be allowed to return to their homes.

The Lincoln County Sheriff Michael Wood advised those planning to return to their homes Sunday to use US 70 if they are returning from the East. Those who are returning from the West will need to go to Carrizozo, NM and use US 380.

The Village of Ruidoso (VOR) posted grapple trucks will haul burned debris like trees, tree limbs, pine needles and yard waste removed from properties and placed along the road's edge next to trash dumpsters, and not "in" the dumpsters.

The trucks will not pick up any type of construction material, according the the VOR post.
