Former Alamogordo police officer sentenced to decade in prison for vehicular homicide

ROSWELL, New Mexico — A former Alamogordo police officer has been sentenced to more than a decade behind bars for his involvement in a crash that killed one person and injured two others.

Luke Maxwell Towner pleaded guilty in October to charges that included vehicular homicide and driving under the influence. His sentence, handed down in December, also includes three years of supervised probation, the Roswell Daily Record newspaper reported.

Towner was speeding when he rear-ended another vehicle at an intersection in Roswell on Dec. 5, 2019, according to court documents. Doug Annis, 26, was in the back seat of the other vehicle and died. Another man and woman were injured.

Towner, who is now 31, told authorities he had been drinking whiskey earlier that night and was responsible for the wreck, court documents state.

Towner served as a police officer in Alamogordo from 2013 to 2016, city officials said.
