EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Friday will be a little cooler than yesterday as we look to return to the upper 80s. We're also hanging on to light winds and potential for scattered showers throughout the region.

El Paso is looking to reach 88 today, Las Cruces 87.

We do have scattered shower potential at 10-20% with rain chances looking to decrease after sunset. We will see some strong breezes throughout the day with breezes kicking up to a light wind for tonight.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Thursday we will see one more day of warming before a backdoor cold front arrives and shifts weather patterns this forecast period.

Today we will end our warming trend for now. Monday El Paso's official high was 78. For your Thursday as we round up this warming trend we are expecting to reach a high of 92 in El Paso. Las Cruces is expected to reach 90.

Today will still remain on the warmer side however temperatures will shift slightly downward as a backdoor cold front is set to arrive in the region tonight.

Around sunset the backdoor cold front will arrive as a result we will see gusts pickup tonight to low end winds. The front will also increase rain chances for our area mountains.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- An El Pasoan is spreading the joy of reading books to children through her work at a bookstore with a special mission.

"The idea came about out of a tragedy," said Susan Patterson.

That idea is "Books are Gems."

Susan Patterson is the bookstore's manager.

"The founder, Miss Paula Madrid, she was a teacher in South El Paso, and her teenage daughter passed away tragically in a car accident. and her daughter loved to read, so she wanted to honor her daughter," said Patterson. "So she started collecting books."

Susan is helping honor her memory.

"It's grown into this just great resource for, for children and adults to to read."

"Books are gems" is a non-profit organization.

"The best thing is seeing a book that you read when you were a child" said Patterson. "We have all of these books right here. They're just waiting to be put on the shelf."

It's been around for more than 20 years. And it's books fly of the shelves.

"We probably have close to 200 people come in a week, and get books for their children, or themselves, or their classroom."

The bookstore offers up to 9 free books a week.

Susan also helps bring stories to life by organizing weekly story hours to capture the imagination of children including Saturday story time on Facebook live.

"It's really a lot of fun to see the kids, participate with the reader and everything." said Patterson. "It just brings great joy to help these kids learn how to read and sometimes help their parents as well."

Susan's willingness to help readers of all ages navigate book genres has earned her the title of this month's ABC-7's Do-Gooder, rewarding her charity of choice with $1,000 from the El Paso Community Foundation.

Susan will donate the award money to non-profit "Books are gems" to keep the literacy efforts.

"It it feels really good. I mean, a lot of people don't realize, how many people don't have access to free books or free teaching materials, and we're just trying to help out the community, teach their children to lead and be to read and be successful and, lead some productive lives."

"Books are gems" accepts book donations including children's books, adult books, and curriculum for the teachers. Because of community response books for gems has made donations to Ruidoso libraries that faced damages after recent flooding.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- An El Pasoan with the goal of uplifting children spends her time encourages the youth through journey's of faith all the while facing a health battle of her own.

"My daughter was with me, and she started to cry," That was the moment Corrine Alvarez found out she had tongue cancer.

"There was days when, you know, I would say, why me," said Alvarez. "It was a hard time for me because i, you know, I'm.. I was down for a while. I couldn't...I had to recover, of course, from the surgery and, and everything."

But she didn't let it defeat her.

"If I even falter and I just sit down and accept this sickness and not try to keep moving forward, it's going to consume me," said Alvarez.

During her health journey, Corrine volunteered with the children's ministry and kept her faith.

"I missed the children very, very much at that time, and I realized at that time that I needed this. I needed the church."

Corrine has worked with children and teens for the past 20 years. In 2011, she was selected as Big Sister of the year with Big brother’s, Big sisters. During COVID she led bible study over zoom for the youth.

Corrine is now 71 years old and today she leads the nursery at Calvary temple. She teaches bible study Wednesday nights and oversees meal preparation for youth in attendance.

"The youth are going to be our future generational leaders, future leaders, like they say of America. So it's important to me to reach out to them and let them know that there's always a place they can come."

Despite the cancer, Corrine continued to put the children ministry first.

"I knew my strength was here with God, with the church, with the children," said Alvarez.

Corrine's commitment to encouraging the youth in the community and her resilience has earned her the title of this month's ABC-7's Do-Gooder, rewarding her charity of choice with $1,000 from the El Paso Community Foundation.

"It's wonderful because you volunteer, but you get more out of what you do. you get more back. more back," said Alvarez "Even just one hug and one kiss from one of these kids, it was like a spoonful of medicine. And I knew, I knew that's what I needed."

Through her outreach with the youth Corrine found relief and in time, healing. Both mental and physical. 

"It was a miracle because I had tested positive on the pet scan, tested positive on the biopsy, and then when they actually took out the tumor, there was no cancer," said Alvarez.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- We are looking at triple digit temps for your Tuesday, with rain chances beginning to climb strengthening in time for the latter half of the week.

Today will be similar to Monday's weather patterns mostly calm with mild breezes and slim rain chances.

Today we will feel the heat seeing temperatures climb throughout the region to the low 100s. El Paso is looking to reach 103, Las Cruces 100.

Rain chances continue to climb into Wednesday with best chance for rain looking to be this weekend.

Winds, dust, and rain chances have been elevated these past two days but today we are anticipating a milder day.

Overall we are looking to see breezy to low end windy conditions at most.

We are still holding on to some slight rain chances at about a 20% for storms midday.

Temperatures throughout the region will still be below the triple digits for today. El Paso is looking to reach 97. Las Cruces 95.

Today we are still looking at potential for severe storms . We will see rain chances pick up to 40-50% today with moisture starting to push in late afternoon into early evening.

Winds will pick up again today as well.

Temperatures will remain in the upper 90s across the region with 96 your expected high El Paso, 94 Las Cruces.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- We remain under an ABC-7 First Alert for the gusty, dusty, winds expected tonight along with elevated rain chances.

Kicking off today weather will be mostly calm. We will start to see more active weather mid afternoon into early evening.

Today we are looking to see a few weather impacts the first being elevated rain chances. We are looking at about a 30-40% chance for some scattered showers and thunderstorms. Rain chances look strongest between about 4-9 PM.

With rain chances we are looking at gusty and dusty wind potential. Gusty winds look to be strongest between 2-7 PM potentially reaching 40-50 mph. With that dusty conditions look to be impactful from 3-8 PM.

We are looking at temperatures throughout the region ranging from 93-98. El Paso is expected to reach 97. Las Cruces 94.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Temps will be slightly cooler today as we feel the impacts of a front moving in. With that, we could also see some stronger gusty winds and some rain chance potential.

Throughout the region today we can expect warm temperatures ranging from 96-102. El Paso is expected to reach a high of 100 with Las Cruces expecting to reach 99.

Along with slightly cooler air, we are still hanging on to some slight chances for isolated thunderstorms locally, with rain chances looking stronger for our Eastern counties.

We will also see east winds pick up today. For the evening, gusts are expected to range between 35-45 mph for west El Paso.

We will crank temperatures up today with a Heat advisory in effect for El Paso County. The heat advisory hoes into effect at noon today into midnight tonight. Throughout the region we can expect temperatures in the low 100s. El Paso is expected to reach 103 and Las Cruces looking at reaching 100.

Today we are also still hanging on to some light rain chances looking at a 20-30% chance for isolated scattered showers.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- The sound of fireworks will ring in Independence Day with booms, pops, and crackles, while we know to expect the loud sounds animals do not.

"Animals coming into a facility does increase. We get flooded with animals," said Alberto Ortiz with El Paso Animal Services.

4th of July is a time for celebration...yet a time for uncertainty for pets.

"We will get a handful of calls. Regarding the animals becoming spooked, jumping out of their backyards. And at that point, they just start running at large," said Ortiz.

Alberto Ortiz with El Paso Animal Services says 4th of July fireworks make animals anxious and often make them abandon their homes.

"The sudden explosion, the sudden lights. And being that it happens at nighttime," said Ortiz "Nighttime is supposed to be quiet and dark. Come 4th of July, the complete opposite."

Signs animals are in distress because of fireworks include:

• Pacing back and forth

• Tucking their tailing between the legs

• Throwing back their ears

• Avoiding food or water

• Crouching in corners

• Hiding behind furniture

To calm an animal in distress you can wrap them in a pressure wrap or a security blanket that smells like you. With your scent, it emulates a hug which will help to comfort your dog making them feel grounded.

"Put them on a leash, get them on a good harness. Just giving them that, that presence, that security blanket," said Ortiz.

To keep your dogs safe from fireworks:

• During fireworks shows keep your pets inside to avoid the loud noise.

• Turn on the television, or play some music, something soothing.

• Give them constant pets.

• A couple of toys, for enrichment

• Give them snacks

"Let's just be conscious. Let's be mindful that not all pets are going to enjoy fireworks and the festivities the way humans are. It's only your responsibility to ensure that they're being kept safe. Calm. Keep them in a harness. Proper identification. The microchip as well," said Ortiz.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) --  Spectacular firework displays wouldn't have the same "spark" without ... "fire". As you prepare to host your IIndependence Day bash here are some safety tips to keep your celebrations from going up in flames.

"They could quickly get out of control, especially during this, this time of extreme drought," said Danny Medrano Sunland Park fire Chief.

According to Sunland Park Fire Department Chief Danny Medrano, on last 4th of July, his crew responded to a dozen fire-related calls.

"hair catching fire or clothing catching fire.//Most of them were brush fires," said Medrano.

To avoid the risk of fire with firework use medrano says, 

"Don't point it towards anybody or any structure. try not to point it towards any brush either."

You should also think about having a fire extinguisher, a bucket of water, or a shovel to pick up sand. With these, you will be prepared to put out small fires in emergencies.

"If you do start a fire by accident, don't hesitate to call 911. we're going to go out there and put out the fire before that extends to anything that endangers a home or a person," said Danny Medrano.

To handle personal firework displays safely:

• Only light one device at a time.

• Never ignite devices in a container.

• Do not try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks.

• Soak both used and unused fireworks in water before discarding them.

• Ensure the used area is clear of any obstructions including dry grass, wood, or debris.

• Pop them on an even surface to avoid fireworks tipping over and igniting in an unplanned trajectory.

• Once fireworks are lit it is important to stand a safe distance away.

"Just be safe. Just just be responsible. this is the time to celebrate our nation's independence. It's not a time to send anybody to the hospital," said Medrano.

Throughout the region we are expecting to see temperatures reach the upper 90s across the region. El Paso is expecting to reach 98 Las Cruces is looking to reach 96.

For today we are looking at a 40-50% chance for rain. Rain chances are present this morning they will slim down by mid afternoon but are expected to still stick around into your evening.

Today still looking at elevate rain chances but we will see rain chances slowly decrease over the next few days as we start to see some drier air push in.

Waking up for your 4th of July we will see cloudy skies with rain chances dropping down to 30% percent.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Fireworks don't just glow and sparkle, while they come with beauty, they also come with danger. With 4th of July days away, the tips you need to know to avoid  a trip to the hospital.

"It is dangerous. Every year we have accidents where there's burns to the body, burns to the hands," said Danny Medrano Sunland Park Fire Chief.

Last 4th of July, his department was called out to 5 firework related injuries that required hospitalization.

"There's enough gunpowder in there to actually, burn through flesh and actually break bones," said Medrano.

According to the Mayo clinic, hands and fingers are the most commonly injured parts of the body. They account for about 31% of cases. These types of injuries often occur when people hold lit fireworks. 

"We get people who try to hold a firework in their fist," said Medrano.

Common fireworks like sparklers are often assumed safe for kids. Children should never ignite fireworks. 

"Different fireworks burn at different, temperatures, but they're well over a thousand degrees. Human skin starts to burn about 130 degrees, give or take," said Medrano. "So you can imagine that instantaneous, ignition or combustion of a firework will immediately burn the skin. It'll mean that we've seen a destruction of hands. hair catching fire or clothing catching fire."

Eye wounds account for about 14% of fireworks-related injuries. They're caused by the gunpowder, sulfur and charcoal that make up most fireworks.

To avoid firework injuries:

• Never throw or point fireworks toward people, animals, vehicles, structures or flammable materials.
• Always follow the instructions on the packaging.
• Have a bucket of water close by.
• Wear eye protection.
• Light only one firework at a time, never relight “a dud.”
• Never light sparklers or fireworks indoors.
• Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from children and pets.
• If you are impaired by alcohol, don’t use fireworks.

Throughout the region we are expecting to see temperatures reach the low 100s across the region. El Paso is expecting to reach 102 Las Cruces is looking to reach 100. Added clouds in the area can impact the temperature keeping it a little cooler so the clouds are certainly something to watch today.

Rain chances are still elevated for today at a 40-50% chance for showers and thunderstorms. With that weather impacts can produce strong wind gusts as well as localized flooding.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- An El Pasoan's love for skateboarding kept him rolling through the bumps and curbs in his life. He turned an idea that started with a board, into a mission that teaches skill and provides the youth with the support he once needed.

"I struggled a lot," said Luis Loya.

Luis "Dino" Loya faced hardships when he was younger.

"There were times in my life when I was homeless. I didn't know where to live. I literally ate dog food sometimes," said Loya.

But one thing that stayed constant in his life... skateboarding.

"Skateboarding always kind of kept me clean and straight so now, I'm at a point in my life where I wanted to give back to the community that helped me out," said Loya.

"The kids would fight all the time. They'd argue. So once Dino's and the skate club came around, all of them just started getting along very well. They don't fight no more," said Christa Ortiz.

Dino started a non-profit youth skateboarding club called Sk8 4kids to benefit underprivileged youths.

"They felt great coming. They love being part of the team, but, academic-wise, everything. They just showed an improvement on everything," said Ortiz, "After being a part of the club they flourished."

Sk8 4kids offers skateboarding practices and friendly skateboarding competitions.

"They help me do better with skating and overall, they're just they're very... they're there for you all the time. Just a lot of support," said Siyan Ketchum.

Through community partnerships, Dino has helped kids master the sport and provided them with nutritional meals.

"Monday at this park, we feed, about 40, 60, sometimes even up to 80 kids. So we provide water, food, we provide equipment," said Loya.

Dino's efforts have made him this month's ABC-7 do-gooder, rewarding his charity of choice with $1,000 from the El Paso Community Foundation.

He plans to donate the reward to Sk8 4kids to purchase more skate equipment.

"They push each other, but at the same time they're competing with each other, but at the same time, they root for each other. It doesn't matter what skill level they're at," said Loya.

Dino says his favorite part of working with Sk8 4kids is...

"If they land a certain trick, everybody knows how hard they struggled for that. And when everybody cheers for them, you know, that brings joy to me because we're all one big community."
