EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- A road closure could impact your commute if you are driving on the east side this weekend.

Pellicano will see road closures between its intersections with Aircoupe, and with Darrington, starting Sunday. The closures are expected to last until at least the end of the month.

El Paso Electric will be installing electrical poles and hardware to service new development within the immediate area.

The company will be working nights from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., from Sunday nights to Friday mornings. The east bound lane closure will be in effect during that time frame.

Officials said drivers should be aware that the closure may extend beyond these times if unforeseen issues or delays occur.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- If you were driving on I-10 East in West El Paso Saturday, you may have encountered a lot of traffic due to the Texas Department of Transportation's closure for road work.

And if you're planning on driving in the area Sunday, you may encounter the same issue. That's because the closure lasts a total of 48 hours: until 5 a.m. Monday.

If you are unable to avoid driving in the area before the closure ends, you'll want to know the detour put in place: You will need to take South Desert Boulevard, to re-enter I-10, past Mesa.

This is to allow TXDOT crews to re-strip parts of the main lanes, and relocate concrete safety barriers on the freeway between Transmountain Road and North Mesa Street.

El Paso, TX (KVIA-TV)—Tx Dot El Paso crews will begin widening the freeway in the median between Mesa Street and Redd Road. According to TX Dot El Paso, the operation will begin in the eastbound lanes, requiring a 49-hour closure of I-10 from Redd to Mesa. The closure will start at 4 am on Saturday, September 7, and be in place until 5 am on Monday, September 9. All traffic will exit at Redd and take the south desert past Mesa. The following weekend, a  49-hour closure will begin in the westbound lanes between Mesa and Redd. TX Dot officials explain that crews will work on widening two bridges between Vinton Road and Transmountain Road. Then, a 56-hour closure of the eastbound lanes will go into effect the weekend of September 13. South Desert will temporarily reopen to just one lane for the eastbound detour. TX Dot officials say you should plan to avoid the area and take an alternate route if possible.

JUAREZ, Chihuahua (KVIA) -- Juárez, Chihuahua, and Mexican authorities responded to reports of a train derailment Tuesday night.

According to a statement sent by the City of Juárez, personnel from the Civil Protection Department responded to a call at 11:01 p.m. last night.

"The train derailment happened at kilometer 302 of the Juárez-Chihuahua highway, between Villa Ahumada and Samalayuca," said Sergio Rodríguez, Director of Juárez Civil Protection.

Officials reported that in this incident left 13 train cars overturned, of which five were transporting sulfuric acid.

A leak was detected in one of these tanks with a capacity of approximately 53,000 liters, identified with the number 1830. The leak was provisionally controlled using a wooden stake.

Rodriguez also said a tank car transporting chlorine gas suffered structural damage, although no leaks of this chemical were reported.

The director of Civil Protection added that during the search efforts in the area, it was reported that several migrants were traveling on top of the train.

After a pedestrian search, they located four people, to whom pre-hospital care was provided.

Local and federal reports said the injured people are:

• A woman originally from Venezuela, with a right foot amputation and hip pain. She was transferred to the General Hospital
• A 17-year-old male was also transported to the General Hospital
• A 7-year-old boy had direct trauma in the head; he was turned over to the National Migration Institute along with his dad

Rodríguez said that members of the Fire Department, the Municipal Rescue Department, the Red Cross, URGE, Chihuahua State Police, Chihuahua Attorney General's Office, as well as the National Migration Institute, the National Guard, participated in the operation, and Ferromex which oversees all cargo trains in Mexico.

Authorities continue with the investigations to determine the causes of the derailment and ensure that no more people are affected.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) - Emergency crews are responding to a vehicle stuck in on Missouri West and I-10 West after Friday's rain flooded the area.

El Paso Police say the right four lanes at I-10 West at Cotton are closed, and the traffic is backed up past Copia. Clearing time is estimated at 2 hours.

TxDOT posted a vehicle was stuck in the high waters along Missouri, and urges drivers to seek an alternate route and higher ground.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- El Paso County Commissioners Court voted 3-1 Monday to contribute $1 million from the county, to go towards the proposed Downtown Deck Plaza.

County Commissioner for Precinct 3 Iliana Holguin was the only member of the body to vote against the measure.

Since 2018, the Paso del Norte Community Foundation has been seeking to build a unique deck plaza over Interstate-10 in Downtown El Paso.

The county said it was asked to put up the $1 million it agreed to contribute. Officials said the contribution would serve as half of a $2 million match required by a grant being sought by the project's stakeholders.

That grant, which was applied for by stakeholders in El Paso last year but not won, is being sought once again from the Reconnecting Communities program. If won, El Paso would receive an additional $5 million to go towards detailed designs for the proposed deck plaza.

It is unclear where the rest of the required match could come from at this point.

ABC-7 is working to gather more information from county officials, and other parties involved. We will update this article once we learn more.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- An overturned semi-trailer is blocking east and westbound lanes on I-10 in Central El Paso.

According to fire dispatch, the call of the crash came after 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

It's happening between Paisano Dr. and Chelsea St.

Fortunately, no injuries are being reported.

Roads have been reduced to one lane in both directions, according to El Paso Police.

Crews are working to clear the semi-trailer from the interstate.

UPDATE: First responders and police have cleared the crash at Passmore and Alameda. All lanes are now open.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) - The City of Socorro is asking drivers to be cautious and use alternative routes after a multi-vehicle crash at Passmore and Alameda in the Lower Valley.

Police responded to the crash and say the east bound lane is currently open, but suggest driver use Jesus Barrera, Vineyard, and Socorro Road to avoid the congestion.

No word yet on any injuries.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- I-10 East at Piedras is closed following a three-vehicle crash that sent one person to the hospital with serious injuries.

El Paso Police says Special Traffic Investigators are investigating the crash.

Police say the call came in at 2:26 a.m.

Police also said a second crash also happened at the scene, involving an unoccupied police car that was helping with traffic control. No injuries were reported from that crash.

Traffic is currently exiting on the Dallas exit.

El Paso, TX (KVIA-TV)-With children walking to school, dashing between cars, or hopping in and out of buses while parents in cars drop kids off. Last week on ABC-7 at 4 we offered tips for drivers, and this week, TXDot’s Jennifer Wright is here with tips you can share with your school-age children. Plus, everything you need to know about the 40 hour closure in 1-10 west.

I-10 Widening West has it’s 40-hour closure of I-10 West, and it’s convoluted in that at 9PM Friday, it closes at the end of the current detour by Los Mochis, and at 4AM Saturday the point of closure moves back to Artcraft. This is so we can open two lanes on I-10 until that detour. BUT, because the two-lane frontage road cannot merge into the two-lane main lanes, we have to revert to closing North Desert at Enchanted Hills until further notice. That closure will begin at 1PM Monday, August 19. There is an on-ramp just after Transmountain that you will need to use to get on I-10, else you will have missed the boat there and will enter the circle of doom through the neighborhood. Please pay attention so you don’t hassle the ‘hood. North Desert will be strictly for Enchanted Hills only. Maps attached.

Montana Mill & Inlay moves to the area from Hawkins to Airway next week. Mesa Mill & Inlay is still working on punch list items. The Mesa Illumination project has so far placed 130 of the 30’ poles, and 37 of the 40’ light poles along Mesa from Doniphan to Glory Road. Once all energized, no more dark driving along Mesa. Sweet. Here’s a quick rundown of the east side widening projects for you:

• Montana Widening will have a complete closure of the eastbound frontage road Monday through Wednesday nights next week to remove barrier to completely open the eastbound frontage road. It’s a welcome event.
• Purple Heart Widening will have daily lane closures, and Thursday night the northbound lanes will be closed at Montana from 9PM - 5AM, with the detour being Montana to Global Reach. Saturday, 8/24 from 3AM to 7PM the whole shebang, north-and southbound lanes will be closed so crews can place bridge girders.
• Loop 375 Widening will have a northbound main lane closure from Zaragoza to North Loop, along with the North Loop underpass Monday through Thursday overnight starting at 9.

EP Water has closures on Montana by Bassett Center, Mesa Street downtown, and Gateway West by Yarbrough which they have shared with me and I include waaaay below. Check them out if they might affect you.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) - The righter interchange ramp along I-10 to US 54 is blocked as TxDOT crews work to clear gravel on the roadway.

Traffic on the ramp is backed up and can be seen on the TxDOT traffic cameras.

Even though our population has decreased slightly, there seems to be more traffic on our roads. And that means more road projects are coming that in the long term will make your drive easier. Update: Two electric cars loaded on a vehicle carrier trailer caught fire Thursday, causing a multi-hour shutdown on I-10 eastbound lanes through the afternoon, according to the El Paso Fire Department. In a post on the its Facebook page, the department says El Paso firefighters were able to quickly contain the fire. Pictures from the department show firefighters approaching a vehicle with a charred front-end, with parts of vehicles loaded above it melting.

According to the department, firefighters had to ensure the lithium batteries inside the cars were safe enough to be moved from the scene.

The El Paso Police Department was able to clear the road to reopen fully by 5 PM.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Traffic is backed up on Interstate 10 eastbound to the Schuster Ave exit near the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) campus.

ABC-7 cameras show a tractor-trailer vehicle carrier on the right shoulder surrounded by emergency vehicles, causing all traffic to exit I-10.

The El Paso Fire Department posted on x.com (formerly Twitter) that there were no injuries reported as of yet.

JUAREZ, Chihuahua (KVIA) -- Juárez Road Safety Coordination agents carried out “Operation Fast and Furious” on 4 Siglos and Costa Rica Boulevard, in the El Chamizal area, as well as Margarito Herrera and Ramón Rayón, in Plaza Sendero Las Torres. The objective was to stop street racing in Juarez.

They secured 108 cars, 35 in the Chamizal area and 73 in the Plaza Sendero las Torres.

During the operation, carried out with the support of the Juárez Secretary of Public Safety, three people were arrested, two people for obstructing police work and one more for disturbing public order.

In a statement, the City of Juárez said this operation was carried out with 41 units and 83 members from both agencies.

They want to call on all citizens to avoid street racing, describing the practice as dangerous for public safety.

Local government officials also said they are working to build “a better road culture," to reduce incidents and to create awareness and responsibility when traveling through the city.

ABC-7 reached out to the Juárez Road Safety Coordination (CGSV) to learn more about these recent trends of street racing.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) - About 630 customers in East El Paso have no power at this time after a vehicle crashed into a light pole along Montana and Lockheed.

It happened about 4 p.m. Saturday.

No word on any injuries.

El Paso Electric says crews have been working to restore power.

The outage caused street lights to go out. A second crash was reported at Montana and Hawkins.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA)-- Due to the demolition of the Thorn avenue bridge, I-10 west and eastbound will be closed from Friday at 9 p.m. until Monday at 5 a.m.

During the closure drivers will have to exit using Red Rd. if they are traveling eastbound and Mesa St. if they are traveling westbound. Once I-10 reopens, Thorn avenue will still be under construction as they build a new and improved replacement.

According to Jonathan Concha, P.E. West Area Engineer the bridge will be taller to meet new requirements on the interstate. The bridge will also be wider to accommodate additional lanes and access for pedestrians.

Many establishments along I-10 may see a decrease is foot traffic this weekend. I spoke with John Tran, manager at Lush Nail Lounge El Paso, he says the weekends are normally their busy days but they are preparing for things to be slower this weekend.

Trans says locals who know their way around the city may use Doniphan or Resler as an alternative route. Which ever route you decide to take we recommend planning ahead to assure you get to your destination on time.

JUAREZ, Chihuahua (KVIA) -- Today, two of the three girls killed in a car crash in Juárez were laid to rest. 45-year-old Henry Raygoza from El Paso is accused of causing the deadly crash.

13-year-old Ashley Daniela, 14-year-old Ixchel Angelica, and 16-year-old Nemesis Gisel died on Monday.

Ashley and Angelica were buried today in South Juárez, accompanied by several family members.

Canal 44 in Juárez is reporting Nemesis' family is waiting to give the final goodbye to her because her mom remains hospitalized in Juárez's General Hospital due to the crash.

Chihuahua investigators say Raygoza was driving a black jeep that rear-ended a blue car the girls were in. It ended on the other side of the road, and a semi-truck crashed into it.

Canal 44 also reported the family traveling in the blue car was heading to buy dresses for a 'quinceañera' that was supposed to happen this Saturday. The two people who survived remain hospitalized in critical condition.

Raygoza was speeding because he was driving away from another crash while intoxicated; he tested positive for cocaine and marijuana.

Juárez Mayor Cruz Pérez Cuéllar was asked his thoughts on this fatal crash.

"I think that despite the terrible nature of the tragedy, it is good that he is being detained, I would prefer that he pays for what he did here in Mexico," Mayor Pérez Cuéllar said.

A judge in Juárez has scheduled a court hearing for Raygoza on Monday.

El Paso, TX ( KVIA)- Major changes will come to I-10 West this week. A 49-hour closure will be in place beginning Monday, June 24:

• I-10 West will open two lanes from Redd Road to just south of Transmountain Road.
• The new permanent westbound Exit 6A (Loop 375/Spur 16/Transmountain Road) will open about ½ miles south of the temporary exit, which will close.
• The current westbound Exit 9 (Redd Road) will close permanently. A new Redd Road exit will be built further south. Traffic heading to Redd Road will use SH 20/Mesa Street/Thorn Avenue (Exit 11) and North Desert Boulevard.

Rest assured, a second weekend-long closure is scheduled the following weekend to demolish the Thorn Avenue overpass. I-10 East and West will be closed at Thorn from 9 p.m. on Friday, June 28, until 5 a.m. on Monday, July 1. Eastbound traffic will take Exit 9 (Redd Road) to South Desert Boulevard and re-enter I-10 past Mesa Street. Westbound traffic will take Exit 11 (SH 20/Mesa Street/Thorn Avenue) to North Desert Boulevard and re-enter I-10 past Transmountain Road.

While I-10 will re-open to traffic the morning of July 1, Thorn Avenue between North Desert Boulevard and South Desert Boulevard will remain closed until Spring 2025. Bypass lanes will be built in each direction below the overpass, allowing traffic on North Desert Boulevard and South Desert Boulevard to avoid the traffic signals at Thorn Avenue.

I-10 Widening West, a project that holds promise for the future of your commute, will expand and improve Interstate 10 in West El Paso County. The project will widen I-10 from two lanes in each direction to three between North Mesa Street and the Texas-New Mexico state line. EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- One person is in the hospital with minor injuries following a crash on the westbound lanes of I-10 near Paisano, according to police.

The crash closed the right three lanes and the Trowbridge ramp, causing a minor backup in the area.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) - El Paso Police say a motorcycle crash in East El Paso left the driver with serious injuries Saturday evening.

It happened about 7:40 p.m. Saturday at Edgemere and Sisal.

Special Traffic Investigators responded to the area to investigate the cause of the crash.

El Paso Police did not release the identity of the driver.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- A crash on Loop 375 near the Balsam exit is blocking traffic and causing a backup along the highway, all the way into Downtown El Paso.

The Texas Department of Transportation alert page shows the crash is blocking a shoulder and two lanes of the highway. Two other lanes, as well as the exit ramp, remain open.

The crash happened at 4:55 PM today, according to the alert page. The clearing time is unknown.

Use an alternative route if you normally use this part of Loop 375 to get home. Use the ABC-7 Traffic Tracker to get home.

ABC-7 is working to learn more about what led up to the crash and when it will be cleared.

Update (July 22, 2024): Parada was released from jail on bond on June 14, 2024.

Parada is scheduled to be arraigned September 11, 2024 at 8:30 AM.

Update (June 12, 2024): Court documents state that officers believed Parada was drunk at the time of the crash due to alleged slurred speech, swaying, blurry and watery eyes, and an unknown alcohol odor coming off his body.

Court documents report that Parada told officers the following: "yes, me and my friend were at the Speaking Rock Casino. I was driving and my friend was in the passenger seat."

Officers report that Parada told them he had consumed multiple tequila shots and multiple beers. Court documents state that Parada has a prior DWI conviction from 2019.

Tribal Officers patrolling Zaragoza had gotten an alert from Speaking Rock Casino about people who caused a disturbance inside. When the officer saw Parada's car, described by casino staff, he or she tried to stop Parada. Parada's car crashed into a pole soon after, court documents state.

Update (June 10, 2024): El Paso Police arrested and charged 36-year-old Socorro resident Ramon Jaime Parada with intoxication manslaughter. They booked him on a $110,000 bond.

Police say the passenger, 25-year-old Socorro resident Rey Leonardo Mendez died in the crash.

Special Traffic Investigators are still looking into the collision. They say Parada was "speeding" south on Zaragoza when he drove head-on into a metal pole near the Zaragoza and Americas intersection.

"Parada was found to be intoxicated and was taken into custody," police officials explained. "The investigation revealed Parada had fled from Tribal Police before the crash."

Update: Special Traffic Investigators with the El Paso Police Department are responding to a crash in lower valley.

Police confirm one person has died as a result of the single vehicle crash and another was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Southbound Americas Avenue is closed to traffic at Zaragoza as police investigate the crash.

TxDOT reports traffic is being detoured on the turnaround and access to the Zaragoza Port of Entry is not currently affected.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- El Paso Police say all lanes at Americas South and Zaragoza have been shut down after a crash.

It happened before 1 p.m. Sunday.

El Paso Fire say two people were transported to an area hospital with life threatening injuries.

Police are asking drivers to observe the detour.

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico (KVIA) -- Motorists driving on and around Foothills at Lohman Ave. will see a road closure this week.

The closure will happen Monday and Tuesday this week, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Volt, Inc. will be installing conduit for upgrades to their facilities.

El Paso, Texas (KVIA)-Rinconada Boulevard from Sonoma Ranch Boulevard to Northrise Drive will have a lane closure in the westbound lane. Additionally, Northrise Drive from Rinconada Boulevard to Cross Creek Road will have a lane closure in the eastbound lane. 

These closures will begin Tuesday, June 4, 2024, and last approximately two weeks. Both locations will have lane closures to allow for roadway work. 

Motorists follow all posted signs. The work and closure will not affect RoadRUNNER Transit or transit stops.

El Paso, TX (KVIA-TV)-Two new safety rest areas in Culberson County will open on Saturday, June 1. The facilities on I-10, both east and west, are nine miles from Van Horn and will replace current rest area locations four miles outside Van Horn. Careful consideration went into location, design, context, and construction. In addition to being the newest of the 76 safety rest areas in the state, the facilities are two of the largest, with 58 trucks and 27 car parking spaces on each side. In the near future, the safety rest areas will form part of the I-10 Truck Parking Availability System, which will provide truck drivers with real-time information on public truck parking sites along I-10. While there are walking paths around the facilities, visitors are reminded of the natural desert environment and should watch for wildlife.

A ceremonial ribbon cutting, a significant event scheduled for Friday, May 31, at 10 a.m. CST at the eastbound facility nine miles east of Van Horn (milepost 150).

JUÁREZ, Chihuahua (KVIA) -- This week, long lines to cross from Juárez to El Paso have been reported by Borderland drivers on social media.

The Juárez's Road Safety Department (Coordinación General de Seguridad Vial) removed 60 drivers on Monday for cutting the line at various Ports of Entry.

Weeks ago, Road Safety officers were placed to assist the new Juárez Bus program and assigned to the different routes of the new public transportation program.

These officers were now sent back to the international bridges to alleviate traffic and prevent people from abusing and cutting the line.

Reports also say drivers are now also reporting to road agents the vehicle type, color, and plates by recording or taking pictures of them.

Juárez Road Safety Department General Coordinator César Tapia told ABC-7 that since December they've been conducting operations at the Bridge of the Americas, Ysleta-Zaragoza, and Paso del Norte bridge.

Since then, nearly 400 drivers have received traffic tickets for cutting the line and not obeying officers telling them to leave the line.

"Having officers at the bridges conducting these operations is causing discomfort to citizens and residents," Tapia said.

Coordinator Tapia also said they want drivers cutting the line to respect other people's time.

If you cut the line, officers will ask you to leave and if you don't obey you could face fines going from $60 to nearly $500; if you have pending traffic tickets in Juárez.
