EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Theresa and David Fisher defied retirement stereotypes by swapping their careers in applied sciences for a life in winemaking.

After 55 years of marriage and decades as engineers, they embarked on a new adventure with their winery, Sombra Antigua Winery, located at 430 La Vina Road, Anthony, NM 88021.

Named in honor of Theresa's great-grandfather who she said traveled with Don Juan de Oñate.

Their vision for a modest tasting room quickly expanded into a thriving business, offering not only their own wines but also hosting a range of events from intimate gatherings to large celebrations.

Sombra Antigua Winery hand-harvests its grapes once a year and produces various wines, including a popular blend named after Theresa.

The Fishers pride themselves on creating a welcoming environment for guests, complete with live music and a relaxing venue.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Angela Greene’s journey from a 23-year career as a dental hygienist to owning a flourishing small business is a story of passion and transformation.

Originally from Roswell, Angela’s new venture into bread baking began when she was inspired by her daughter’s sourdough creations.

What started as a fun activity quickly turned into a business after she shared photos online and received numerous inquiries.

Despite initial skepticism from her family about the quantity of bread she was baking, Angela now enjoys a thriving business with a loyal customer base.

She bakes twice a week, dedicating three days to each batch of sourdough bread.

Her process includes preparing the starter, mixing the ingredients, shaping the dough, and baking it to perfection.

Angela’s commitment to her craft is evident in every loaf and cookie she makes, and she’s fully immersed in her new career.

"I am so loving my life and baking bread, and it's a great life," she says.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Since 2022, Johnathan Killings has served as the El Paso Fire Chief, bringing over 27 years of experience to the role.

This week's Sunday Funday moment is brought to you by Sarah Farms.

His journey began at 19 when he applied to the El Paso Fire Department to support his younger brother. Despite initial setbacks, his persistence paid off years later, leading to a distinguished career in firefighting.

His office is a testament to his dedication, adorned with awards and challenge coins—a tradition similar to the military, recognizing achievements, commemorating events, and showing appreciation.

Notably, he has met both presidents during his career.

Under his leadership, the department is undergoing significant upgrades.

Multiple locations are being renovated to improve living quarters for firefighters.

Staffing levels have expanded from 940 to 988, and a new fire station is set to open on the Far East Side.

Rebranded uniforms now better highlight the department’s extensive range of services, including ambulance operations, hazmat responses, mountain rescues, and more.

The Mobile Integrated Health Team is actively following up with frequent 911 users, providing crucial support to those in need.

Looking ahead, the department is also working on bringing the first air ambulance to El Paso, further enhancing emergency response capabilities.

If you’re interested, Chief said they are hiring for telecommunication positions.

As a prolific author with 8 published books, host of the popular podcast 'Words on a Wire', and a recognized voice in the writing community, Chacon's success didn't come without challenges.

"Your thought processes are sabotaging. Eventually, they are like flies, get out of here," he recalls of his early doubts.

However, his breakthrough book, 'And the Shadows Took Him', opened unexpected doors, including a book tour and a transformative year in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Despite these global experiences, it's the Borderland that continues to inspire him.

"I don't think a lot of people live in an environment that is so creative and so full of possibilities, as we do here on the border," he shares warmly.

Chacon's journey is a testament to pursuing one's passions and turning aspirations into reality.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Step back in time to early 1920s El Paso, where ABC-7 uncovers a cherished recipe passed down through generations in this week's Sunday Funday moment, sponsored by Sarah Farms.

In a vintage photo capturing the essence of the era at the corner of Copia and Alameda, lies the Pickle Inn, where a family's treasured enchilada sauce was born.

"We have to boil the chilies and then mix the sauce, blend them," shares Maricela, whose roots in the restaurant industry run deep, thanks to her father's establishment renowned for its enchiladas.

Later, the family relocated to a larger venue at the corner of Reynolds and Alameda. "In 1949, he opened the 49-year kitchen," Maricela reminisces.

The restaurant flourished for nearly three decades until an unfortunate incident led to its closure in 1974. But the family's culinary legacy endured.

Stepping in to assist her brother's struggling food truck, 49er Kitchen, Maricela introduced the family's renowned enchiladas to the menu, saving the business with a simple yet profound solution.

Their efforts paid off, with the enchilada recipe earning the Best Food Truck of the Border award in 2014 and 2015.

As Maricela continues her journey, competing for a spot on the cover of Taste of Home, she invites you to cast your vote in support by clicking here.

Horizon High School's English teacher, James Riddle, spearheaded a project that elevated the voices of 150 students, turning them into coauthors of the book "Migrant 915: A View from the Border."

Their astonishment was palpable as the book's impact exceeded expectations. "I was so shocked," said Johana Cortes, one of the co-authors. "Is this real?" echoed Isabella Castro, another co-author.

Their disbelief turned to pride as the 447-page book gained traction, quickly becoming the number one new release in its category on Amazon.

Principal Robert Trejo expressed overwhelming pride, stating, "To say that I'm proud is an understatement."

Within its pages, the students shared personal stories and perspectives on immigration, sparking recognition from Congress.

Riddle recounted the memorable moment when Veronica Escobar's office called to acknowledge their work, leaving the students in awe.

Reflecting on the significance of their accomplishment, Nadia Ruiz shared, "I felt like I was noticed, I felt like I was heard." Trejo encouraged students to "dream big because all everything is possible."

The book, as described by Riddle, remains impartial, neither leaning left nor right.

Nadia emphasized the humanity behind immigration, reminding readers that immigrants are individuals striving for happiness and a better future for their children.

CHAPARRAL, N.M. (KVIA) -- At Chaparral Middle School, stretching a small budget has long been a challenge, particularly for the MESA after-school program, aimed at helping students excel in math and science.
Despite limited resources, nine students participate in the program, competing at the state level with science-based projects aimed at making a positive impact on the world.

However, previous limitations in time and resources hindered their ability to fully dedicate themselves to their projects.

Fundraising efforts were essential, requiring significant time and effort.

Now, thanks to state funding provided to the MESA program in New Mexico, students can focus more on their projects and less on fundraising.

This additional funding has already yielded impressive results, with three Chaparral students earning first, second, and third place at the state competition.

Their projects range from an app to track student meal consumption to a device measuring heart rate and oxygen for infants, showcasing their ingenuity and dedication to addressing real-world issues.

With aspirations to compete nationally in San Diego, these students are proving that even with previous limited resources, they can achieve remarkable success.

Thanks to the state funding allocated by Willie Madrid, New Mexico State Representative, to the MESA program, they now have the resources needed to fully dedicate themselves to their projects and excel in their endeavors.

Under the guidance of their teacher, who has seen students win nationals four times in the past seven years, they continue to excel.

For those interested in supporting their endeavors, information on donating can be found by reaching out to Chaparral Middle School.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KVIA) — Erich Williams didn't grow up dreaming of life on a ranch.

Raised in apartments, he embraced baggy jeans and rap music as a kid.

But life took a turn, leading him to don cowboy gear and manage Escuela Vieja Farms in Las Cruces.

"It kind of fell into this job... or maybe we should say he fell in love, which turned his life around.

Meeting Jessica online transformed Erich's life. "I was 240 pounds. I was a drunk and I was smoking cigarettes... I wanted to get better," he recalled.

Their unlikely pairing — Erich from a non-farming background and Jessica born into farming — blossomed into a successful partnership. They now oversee a diverse array of animals at Escuela Vieja Farms, including goats, turkeys, and chickens.

"We come from different backgrounds, but we survive with each other's help," Jessica said.

Erich credits his wife for his ranch life, acknowledging, "there's no way in heck I could have done this there. There's no way."

Their story of love, dedication, and unexpected paths is a testament to the transformative power of partnership.

In operation for less than a year, Café Piro has become a vibrant space where culinary traditions intertwine, offering a taste of heritage and community in every dish.

Growing up, Gabe Padilla experienced the struggle of preserving their heritage in a community that he says often misunderstood or judged it.

Determined to honor his roots, Gabe and his wife, Mel Padilla, established Café Piro, paying homage to Gabe's Piro tribe by adopting his last name for the café.

Through their establishment, they endeavor to educate and share their vibrant cultural heritage with the community.

Operating three days a week, Café Piro serves a menu deeply rooted in locally grown Native American and Mexican cuisine.

Their dishes, made from scratch using fresh, seasonal ingredients, celebrate the flavors and traditions of both cultures.

Moreover, the café pays homage to tradition through monthly ceramic workshops, where guests can create and dine on handmade plates inspired by ancestral craftsmanship.

Every aspect of Café Piro is infused with love and dedication, from the homemade ceramics adorning the tables to the natural dyes used in the furniture.

The owners' commitment extends beyond cultural preservation—they prioritize the well-being of their employees by offering generous wages and ensuring a healthy work-life balance.

In 2016, the Bowie Breakfast Club, comprised of proud members from the Class of the 1950s, emerged with a mission to provide scholarships for current Bowie High School students.

Their dedication sparked the interest of the Bowie Alumni Association, whose members, hailing from the Class of the 1970s, eagerly joined forces in pursuit of this noble cause.

Gathered around tables adorned with memorabilia from their respective eras, these alumni, representing different generations, collaborate with a singular goal: to uplift and support the next generation of Bowie students.

Through various fundraising endeavors, including raffles, dances, and community outreach, they work diligently to raise scholarship funds.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- In honor of women's history month, ABC-7 is showcasing some of the amazing stories around the Borderland.

This woman's journey to success began like many others,  after earning her degree.

Imagine graduating from college, working in your field only to realize, it's not for you.

That is how El Pasoan Mel Maese Goldberg first set out for her slice of happiness.

This story is this week's Sunday Funday moment, brought to you by Sarah Farms.

"I remember telling my parents, I have this idea to open a restaurant and my Mom was like, what, you don't even know how to make pizza, what are you talking about, and I said I know, I know, but I know I will learn. You make a lot of mistakes but there was no failure for options, like, it was not an option."

It's the Pizza Joint and Mel is still hands-on in the kitchen, making sure every ingredient is in there, including love.

"I got my first location and literally had to open within six weeks because I only had six weeks until I really had to start making money because everything was gone. One of the reasons it worked so quickly is because I did not have time to doubt myself in the beginning."

After 13 years, that dedication has turned into a successful business with three locations and 45 workers.

"We have a lot of people from out of town especially military, that are from the east coast, they come in and they say hey, you guys have great pizza, it reminds me of back home, that's also pretty cool too."

Mel let us put her pizza to the test, and it was delicious.

Send us your feel good story for a chance to be featured in a Sunday Funday moment by emailing us.

Delta Kappa Gamma, a nationwide organization, is committed to supporting women educators. In El Paso, its chapter comprises 30 retired educators from the local school system.

This year, these former teachers are rallying behind a heartwarming initiative called "I Found a Quilted Heart."

Here's the inspiring tale on this Sunday Funday moment, brought to you by Sarah Farms.

"I Found a Quilted Heart" is all about crafting anonymous quilted hearts and placing them around town for people to stumble upon. It's a delightful game of kindness and surprise.

The passion behind this project is evident in the words of its creators. "The whole object in my mind is, if someone from El Paso finds a heart, that they really enjoy it and know that someone made this with a whole lot of love and compassion for each person out there."

With over 150 years of teaching experience among them, these retired educators have been tirelessly crafting hundreds of hearts since September. "Hopefully, see somebody pick one up to see their reaction because, to me, that's the best part of it, to see their reaction, if they are smiling, and laughing, hopefully, they are not making an ugly face."

Each heart takes about an hour to make, with some members producing up to fifteen hearts. "Well if it brings someone a smile, then it will be worth it, and I hope that it will at least bring them a smile."

Their hope is simple: "That the hearts will find a home and that they will be loved."

Reflecting on the experience, one member shared, "For me, it's like when you see in the movies, where someone walks off and, yes. That's how it feels like, I want to tell someone, I want to tell someone."

In the end, it's the act of giving that truly matters. "It's better to give than to receive, and you want to see the reactions."

"We empower women, we give them self-confidence because having done something once, you can do it twice. We also give them the competence," says Roger De Moor, Executive Director at Rebuilding Together.

The workshops, available for women aged sixteen or older, cover plumbing, emergency shut-offs, and basic knowledge of water, gas, and electricity.

Maria Sanchez, a student at She Builds, expressed her hopes to learn how to use tools and perform household tasks. During the module, participants engage in activities like tile installation.

Cristina Zuniga, Marketing and Admin Assistant invites more women to participate and engage in home maintenance activities.

"It's a big confidence boost, personally for myself, and I see it in so many others as well," Cristina shares.

In a captivating Sunday Funday moment, we take you on a journey to the El Paso Zoo, where a twenty-five-year-old veteran unfolds a tale that began on the sandy beaches of San Diego many moons ago.

Rescued and now residing at the zoo, this colossal figure isn't just significant in weight but boasts an impressive size that captures the imagination.

Prepare to be enchanted by the rich history and grandeur of this beloved veteran.

Known for his voracious appetite, L.B. can consume an impressive 38 pounds of fish daily, showcasing his hearty sea lion appetite.

According to the El Paso Zoo, sea lions, like L.B., exhibit remarkable abilities, with powerful flippers enabling speeds of up to 25 miles per hour and the capacity to slow their heart rate, allowing them to stay submerged for up to 10 minutes.

L.B., a retiree from the Navy and a participant in the U.S. Marine Mammal Program, acquired many of his behaviors there, embodying a "work smarter, not harder" approach.

The zookeepers continuously devise innovative ways to keep L.B. active and engaged, and during his programs, he can even offer a salute, a skill he learned at the zoo.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- This week's Sunday Funday moment, sponsored by Sarah Farms, takes us on a delightful journey with Janeth Gomez, the talented bartender at La Condesa.

She treated us to three specially crafted cocktails that are perfect for those who enjoy a tasty drink, but also for those embracing the "new year, new you" mantra by avoiding alcohol.

She's crafted simple yet delicious mocktails that can be savored at the restaurant or easily recreated at home.

Introducing a refreshing trio of non-alcoholic delights:

Drink 1: Virgin Margarita

  • ½ cup Sprite
  • Splash of grapefruit juice
  • Squeeze of lemon
  • Lemon garnish

Drink 2: Virgin Cherry Limeade

  • 2/3 cup Squirt soda
  • 1/3 cup pineapple orange juice
  • Topped with cherry juice
  • Maraschino cherry garnish

Drink 3: Virgin Blackberry Guava

  • 1 spoonful of black cherries
  • ½ cup mineral water
  • 2/3 cup guava juice
  • Orange squeeze
  • Topped with 1 spoonful of black cherries

What makes these beverages even more appealing is the lack of strict measurements – just a dash of this and a dash of that.

This approach not only allows for a more relaxed and enjoyable experience but also aligns perfectly with your positive journey.

Whether you're at La Condesa or in the comfort of your home, these mocktail recipes provide a refreshing alternative, ensuring everyone can partake in the Sunday Sips experience.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- This week's Sunday Funday moment, generously brought to you by Sarah Farms, captures the touching efforts of these compassionate students. Gadsden High School's NJROTC cadets, led by Senior Naval Science Instructor Mark Morrell, orchestrated a festive toy drive to bring holiday cheer to children at the local Children's Hospital. Hosting their own toy drive at Gadsden, the cadets passionately collected, packed, and personally delivered a bundle of joy to brighten the lives of young patients spending Christmas in the hospital.

The initiative aimed to connect students with the reality that there are peers their age, or even younger, grappling with various health conditions during the holiday season. "Cadets connect with the idea of being able to brighten up a child's holiday, even though they are in the hospital," expressed Morrell.

Nicole Boik, a Child Life Specialist at El Paso Children's Hospital, expressed, "We don't tell our families in advance before we receive donations before we pass out toys, so it's always like Christmas whenever they get an item, and it makes their day. They appreciate it more than anyone knows."

According to El Paso Children's Hospital staff member, each gift, made a meaningful contribution to brightening the lives of young patients during their hospital stay. Morrell emphasized the importance of slowing down during the holiday rush and embracing the spirit of giving.

The cadets' act of generosity serves as a reminder that even a small gesture can make a significant impact, especially during the holiday season. With every toy collected and every smile sparked, these NJROTC cadets created lasting memories and brought a touch of warmth to the Children's Hospital, exemplifying the true spirit of giving.

Though visitors can only admire the spectacle from the outside, the enchantment is palpable.

Maribel's dedication to spreading joy and smiles has turned her home into a holiday beacon, drawing crowds from across the city and beyond.

This captivating holiday haven, adorned with carefully collected ornaments spanning 30 to 32 years, has become a cherished tradition for the community.

The journey through this Winter Wonderland is a visual delight, with every ornament and detail meticulously curated over the years.

Not only is the home a feast for the eyes, but it also serves a greater purpose.

This marks her third year of spreading cheer beyond her home, delivering smiles even with used toys.

As we anticipate the return of the inside tour next year, the exterior of 1509 Capitan Ridge continues to shine bright, illuminating the holiday spirit in El Paso.

For those eager to catch a glimpse, the address is open to all at 1509 Capitan Ridge, El Paso, TX.

Until next December, the Winter Wonderland at Maribel's home remains a testament to the power of holiday magic and community spirit.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- In this week's Sunday Funday moment, we delve into K9 Axel. As Axel gracefully concludes his active duty, the early stages of arthritis signal a triumphant transition into retirement for this exceptional agent.

We explore Axel's remarkable career and his enduring impact on border protection, brought to you by Sarah Farms.

K9 Handler Adrian Perez reminisces about the first meeting with Axel, a big German Shepherd whose intelligence and gentleness quickly dispelled any initial intimidation.

According to Adrian, Axel, along with other dedicated K9s, plays a crucial role in border patrol, conducting inspections of vehicles, buses, trains, and parcels to locate humans.

Axel's five-year tenure as a border guardian has been filled with excitement. Adrian shares, "In the morning, he sees me in my uniform, picking up the keys, the rattling, and he is excited to come to work."

As Axel steps into retirement, his recognition both within the El Paso Sector and nationally stands as a testament to his outstanding service.

Beyond the accolades, Axel's nose for justice has made a tangible impact, helping uncover hidden fortunes and aiding in the seizure of a substantial amount of bulk cash during joint operations with other agencies.

Describing Axel's personality, Perez highlights his awesomeness, hard work, and excellent rapport with people during tasks such as checking buses and trains. Now, as Axel embarks on the road to retirement, Perez shares exciting plans for his golden years, from cheering at games to playful romps in dog parks.

Axel's legacy is not just one of duty but also of joy and camaraderie. As this K9 hero embraces retirement, the world becomes his playground, symbolizing a well-deserved chapter of relaxation and happiness after years of dedicated service to protecting the border.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- In this week's Sunday Funday moment, Tilisa Elliott, a 15-year-old from North Carolina, shines as a symbol of boundless resilience.

A Courageous Beginning

Tilisa's story began with a heart-wrenching revelation—birth defects loomed before her birth. Her arrival brought a race against time, an immediate surgery, and the beginning of an incredible journey.

A Double Dose of Challenges

At just 5 years old, another storm arrived: a cancer diagnosis. The Elliott family, undaunted, embarked on a quest for the best care for their daughter. After years of treatment, she is now, cancer free.

The El Paso Miracle

At the age of 2, Elliott's family's path led them to Dr. Alam who is now in El Paso. According to the Children's Hospital in El Paso, Dr. Alam recently performed a "life-changing" surgery, initially expected to take fifteen hours, lasting a mere 25-30 minutes. This marked Tilisa's 33rd surgery.

Holiday Magic at the Hospital

Tilisa's strength also echoes in her family's sacrifices. Only four of her 15 Christmases were celebrated at home, the rest at the hospital, bringing the festive spirit to her bedside.

A Heartfelt Journey

Through trials and tribulations, the Elliotts embraced El Paso's warmth and cuisine, their spirits unwavering. Tilisa's story is a testament to the human spirit's ability to conquer adversity.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- In this week's Sunday Funday moment, three sisters are gearing up to host a concert for veterans and their plus ones, a free-of-charge event for those who have served our nation.

These sisters' journey to this altruistic moment is closely intertwined with their family's military connection.

According to Susan Grajeda, the three sister's mother and manager, says her father was a veteran. She said he instilled in them a profound respect for the sacrifices made by those in uniform. Having experienced frequent relocations due to her dad's military service, Susan said she appreciates the significance of the diverse background that she has taught her daughters.

This year, as Veterans Day approaches, they have decided to give back to their local community.

In an interview, Mia Grajeda, Sierra Grajeda, and Savannah Grajeda expressed their feelings by saying that this is their way of saying thank you to all the veterans out there, especially since their grandpa was one of them.

The three sisters said they lowered the ticket price for the public to just $5 per person. They said It's a gesture of gratitude to the veterans and their families.

As the event approaches, they invite the community to celebrate the bond between veterans and their families. Mia said that sometimes 'thank you' goes a long way.

The event takes place November 10, for more information click here. You can also follow them on Instagram.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Meet the spirited couple at 3100 Jarvis Drive, El Paso, Texas, who have been turning their home into a Halloween wonderland since August. Their enthusiasm knows no bounds as they transform their residence into a dazzling spectacle of Halloween decorations.

Every night until the final Halloween hour, their house is a dazzling spectacle of lights, ghouls, and eerie decor.

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- ABC-7 recently had the opportunity to sit down for a one-on-one interview with retired Army Sergeant First Class Linda Wolfe, best known to many of us as the mother of singing sensation Khalid.

Wolf tells ABC-7 that she was an Army brat who wanted to serve her country to find balance in her life.

"I was in a singing group before the Army and we would struggle out there as a lot of singers go through and I just needed some balance in my life," Wolfe said.

She soon discovered the Army life wasn't an easy one.

"There was a lot of struggles. I went in thinking it was a safe place for women... and I found that out to be false."

After being harassed by a senior enlisted man, Wolfe says she understood it was important for her to get ahead in order for her to protect herself.

At 25, she became a mother to her first-born, Khalid. His birth gave her even more reason to advance her career.

As she took care of Khalid and welcomed her second child, Regina, Wolfe started to work her way up the ranks.

She auditioned and was selected to be a vocalist in the Army, using her voice to better morale.

Wolfe served all over the world, including a role in the Invasion force of Iraq in 2003.

"When you thought about not being able to see your kids again. It gave you the strength that I didn't know that I had," says Wolfe.

With a talented son on the cusp or stardom, Wolfe retired from the Army in 2016.

Soon after, she helped form the Great Khalid Foundation to offer Performing Arts Scholarship and provide children with backpacks and school supplies.

"I'm here still trying to do for the communities of El Paso natives; to do the work that I know that my son wants me to do here and that I know that the El Pasoans need."

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Built in 1875 by pioneer Joseph Magoffin, the historic Magoffin Home still tells the story of the adventures of a multicultural family who actively participated in military service, trade, and in U.S. expansion and settlement.

The site also offers an array of family fun activities. The staff offers historic cooking lessons from the El Paso Cook Book, the first ever cook book published in El Paso in 1898.

These historic recipes were compiled by a Ladies Auxiliary to raise funds for El Paso's YMCA.

The cook book contains over 430 recipes ranging from Pigs in a Blanket to Lobster a la Newberg.

"I love it, my colleagues, we feed off each other with our interests and our passions for history," said Gloria Garza, host of the cooking class.

All members of the community are invited to join the class held on the first Saturday of each month.

"So they can appreciate the history and El Paso more," says William Mack, a class participant.

The El Paso Cook Book is valuable from a historic standpoint, organizers add. It tells us about El Paso cookery at the beginning of the twentieth century.

"I think its very important to the El Paso community to know about our history, the past, and learn what kind of wonderful recipes our ancestors had in place and so it was fun today."

"I want to walk like those girls. I was imagining playing with them and walking with them on the scooter," said Victoria.

Victoria's mother, Melinda De La Luz, said, "And sure enough, that's when she took her first steps. So she was inspired, you know, by seeing other kids... wanting to do what they're doing, and it was just amazing."

Last year, Victoria lost her health benefits, and the family was unable to buy a power wheelchair.

They designed and created customized t-shirts showing Victoria standing against the world to raise funds.

Victoria's father, Andrew De La Luz, says, "Don't give up, don't give up. You know, don't let anybody back you up to a corner. There's plenty of things that we were told, you know... were not going to be a possibility for her, and she's doing it. "
