Jesus A. Rodriguez, assistant news director
Jesus is a true product of the Borderland. He was born in El Paso, but grew up in Ciudad Juárez and later lived in Las Cruces.
When Jesus moved to El Paso, he attended Montwood High School and then El Paso Community College, where he discovered his passion for journalism, writing, photography and video production. It was all thanks to his time at EPCC’s student-run newspaper, the Tejano Tribune, where he started as a reporter and then became the editor-in-chief.
He later transferred to New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. He spent two years there and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism & Mass Communications and a Minor in Government.
Jesus moved back to El Paso and started his career at KVIA ABC-7 in June of 2016 as an intern. A few months later, he was hired as a photojournalist. Shortly after, he was promoted to News Producer of Good Morning El Paso.
His time in the morning came to an end after nearly four years. He was asked to become the News Producer of the station’s flagship newscast, ABC-7 at 10.
The station once again promoted Jesus in October of 2022. He became the prime time Executive Producer. He was promoted to Assistant News Director in May of 2024.
Throughout the years, Jesus has mostly worked from the newsroom and the control room, but he has also been out in the field recording video for several special reports with ABC-7’s reporters.
Jesus has covered some of the Borderland’s major news events, including Pope Francis’ visit to Juarez, the record-breaking number of migrants arriving over the past few years, the COVID-19 pandemic, and El Paso’s darkest day: the mass shooting at the Cielo Vista Walmart on Aug. 3, 2019.
Aside from journalism, Jesus has several passions. He loves video games, virtual reality technology, computers, astronomy, great films and music, anything from rock to reggaeton and cumbias to classical.
